While my '71 GTX is off to the shop for body and paint work, I figured I would clean, re-seal and detail the 440. One issue I have had is poor performance from my power brakes (one good stop, then had to let the vacuum build back up), there was only 8" of vacuum at idle at 850rpm, so I figured there was a cam with too much duration. Since the engine was rebuilt years ago, by the original owner and there is no build paper work, I decided to just pull it down to the shortblock and see what I was dealing with. It's definitely an old school build, with TRW 2295 dome pistons, "six pack" rods, crane iron rockers, etc... The cam is a Racer Brown SSH-25 grind. What is the minimum amount of needed for proper power booster function? And is the RB SSH25 cam known for low vac readings?
The original build included, Hooker headers, Edelbrock DP4B intake and a Holley 800 DP carb. I'll be running HP manifolds, stock intake and original AVS carb when done.

Pretty much the same as the 474 purpleshaft. Yes vacuum would be low but shouldn't be that low. The engine likely needed more base timing.
Change the cam if you're putting the rest to stock.
Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat Hear my motor screamin while I'm tearin up the street

I had a MP electronic and then a stock points distributor with the Pertronix Ign 2 and to even start the car, I had to have the initial at over 22 degrees. Checked with two different dial back lights.

If yer going back to OEM on the induction, and exhaust, why not make it a package deal and go back to stock with the cam, too???
Easier to live with...
The reason? I have gotten very lucky over the last 25 years and have had many successful cam break-ins, that I almost feel the luck will run out The cam in the engine is already run-in and actually makes lots of power in the big girl. When I got it, the headers were trashed, so I had the whole season last year running with stock HP manifolds. The only real change now, will be the intake/carb. I also read the new MP cams are made in China, no thanks! Maybe I'll go withe the Bob K cam, had 18" of vacuum in my A12 Bees 440.

Has the cam been degreed in? You may try advancing it some unless it's already advanced. R.
It has been, don't know where it was dialed in though. There is an offset bushing in the timing gear that has been staked in place. I should have put the degree wheel on to see where it was set, but I'm betting it was advanced.
Oh well, I'm going to bite th bullet and drop another $250 in this car and get the Bob K cam.

If you have a 4 speed and a 4.10 gear, be sure you consult with Bob on where he recommends installing it at.
Thanks for the help and advise guys. Yes, Bob helped me set up the cam in my A12 Bee with a 4-spd and 4.10s. He's a great guy to deal with.
