Have a 05 dakota with 115,000 miles. Lately while driving the truck has been down shifting eracticly. Doing 65-70 mph on the highway the truck keeps shinfting to a lower gear even on a flat road. Now its even doing it at much lower speeds. I changed the egr valve and it stopped for about a day then started again. Anyone have any ideas what can be wrong? The regular shifting is fine otherwise. Pulled the transmission pan and everything looked good with no grit or metal in the pan. Help

This is a three speed with overdrive. No engine light or error codes

Well we had alot of trouble with the Gov solenoid and pressure sensor. Not to hard to replaace as you have to drop the pan. I always replace both the gov solenoid and press sensor while in there. I would see some that did not set a code. Also make sure your throttle pressure cable is not binding and is adjusted right. I also had a few that would have weird shift patterns that had a bad output shaft sensor. It tells the controller the output shaft speed so it knows where to put the gov press and how much to duty cycle the solenoid. You can have all that checked with a scanner. Ron

Not in 2005. 3.7L engines used the 42RLE trans, same trans that was in the Intrepid. 4.7 engines used 545RFE trans, same as in the Ram. Niether of these transmissions have governor pressure solenoids nor do they have throttle pressure cables.

I thought he said its a 42RE ? I really did not pay attention to the year which I guess I should have as I thought he said its a three speeed with overdrive which is what most people call the 42RE and the 46RE and so on. Of course the 42RLE is the 604 rear drive version and the 45RFE and 545RFE are all clutches and no bands as I have done both of them. In the dealer I got very used to just giving the parts man the repair order and then he used the VIN for the parts as many times I did not pay attention to the year since they had all the info from the VIN.
Bottom line no matter what trans it is I would have it scanned first. Both of the other trans use input and output speed sensors which many times its a simple sensor but not always. Seems to me I had some line press sensor problems now and then also on the 45 and 545RFE also and some would break a bolt in the valve body on an accumulator plate as I remember seeing that more then it should have done it but its been almost 5 years since I worked on them. Ron

545RFE. If you can have it scanned, check the throttle position sensor for voltage fluctuations. This can cause shifting problems.
