I've been looking for quite some time, but I hadn't been able to close a deal for various reasons. Most recently I had to put about $3k into my daily driver so I thought my truck hunting had come to an end. Then I found this one. I only paid $1500 for it. Its an '89 with 318, 2wd, all stock, still has working factory radio, heat/defroster work, a/c needs servicing, I think a charge and some seals will do it. Nothing is hacked up on the truck. Body is solid with only some surface rust here and there, and there are two punctures on the bed rail that look like nail holes. No other issues that I could see. I need to look at the rear end/gears. Nice and solid all the way around. He had already done the brakes with new rotors, pads, drums, shoes, and wheel cylinders, didn't replace the calipers. He also replaced plugs, wires, rotor/cap, valve cover gaskets, headlights. All stuff that I would have had to do, so at this price having it already done is a plus. The water pump went out and I think he was tired of putting time into it so that's where I come in. I put the new water pump in today and did oil and filter. She runs nice and smooth, quiet, and ran just fine on my test drive. Interior is in pretty good shape too. Im ready to tear into it. My original plan was to find something that I would do in Satin Black with gloss black accents, like the DODGE on the tailgate, maybe some kind of accent stripe. I really liked a members car that I saw years ago (Exit1985 or something like that) who had a satin black RR IIRC, with two gloss black racing stipes. Now Im thinking that I really like this Charcoal Gray color. We'll see. Either way, I plan on following the steps in the infamous "paintjobon a budget" thread. OK, heres the pics. roe

I'll try to remember to post pics of the bed, bed rail (where those two punctures are), and engine bay. roe

Oh yeah, that'll do! Good game plan on the paint scheme, that's what I have in mind for mine. Best bang for your buck on these is to go electric fan, throw away the catalytic convertor, and true duals: You'll get another 1 to 2mpg and it won't feel choked up anymore. After that, it's all a matter of personal taste. D250 control arms to lower it, take a leaf out of the back to soften it up a bit, sway bars, flat black your grill, Ramcharger seats/console, maybe a 360 with J heads, the list goes on for what I want to do with mine. Have a look at Your steering coupler if there's some play in the steering wheel, it's a weak spot on these trucks.

Thanks guys. I'll definitely try to get the stuff above the windshield tackled first. So far there doesn't appear to be any major issue there, but I have to investigate further. Is there a seam sealer that you guys recommend? Something I can paint right over? I'll look at the steering coupler too, but it feels nice and tight while driving.
I plan on ditching the catalytic converter and running true duals with a H-pipe. If I can get some headers from a guy who was selling a truck, then I'll throw them in as well, or maybe some shorties. If not, I think I'll be fine just running the exhaust off of the manifolds.
While replacing the water pump I was mulling over whether to go electronic fans or just replace the the clutch.
Also, I don't know if I'm going to mess with the ride height. I kind of like where it is now. I'm going to do the suspension (there's a missing strut rod bushing) and drive it a while though before I decide.

remember you have a TBI engine. You cant go crazy with mods. A good single 2.5 system with a Hooker Aero Chamber muffler will be more than ample and sound great.

Yeah, I was wondering how far I can go with performance mods with the tbi. How much power can it support? I plan on keeping all of the tbi system in place, and trying to make this a daily driver that sounds good too.
I read the thread about the Mustang tank/sender, but I'm probably going to leave the stock tank. So I think my exhaust ticket is going to most likely be manifolds, but I'm strongly considering shorties, 2.5" pipe into a 1 in 2 out muffler with duals out the back behind the tires. I had it like this on the truck I sold and it sounded pretty good.
If I were still in FL I would pick up the stuff from you that you just pulled off. But I guess I'll take care of the exhaust after I deal with the suspension.

with the TBI/computer as they are about all you can do is try some 360 injectors and possibly a 360 computer. The 360 computer has a different timing and fuel curve than the 318 computer. HP wise your about maxed out as it sits. Some lower gears in the rear will help also.

That's a little disappointing not not a big deal. I was never planning on trying to make a lot of power with this thing. Just a nice solid driver. So I think it just cements my plan to do an exhaust system, maybe some shorty headers, single in dual out muffler for dual tips

I don't think your going to say any gain going from manifolds to a shorty header IMO and my experience putting a set on. You will gain some with full length headers, but if this is going to be a daily/cruiser, lower RPM, manifolds will work just as well. Magnum ones flow a little better, but you need to do something with the kickdown linkage---at least I did (I put pacesetter shorties in place of stock magnum manifolds.)

NICE! As far as the tank, a tank from a Ramcharger can be made to fit (biggest hurdle is swapping crossmembers). Having the tank in back, rather than the side, gives the truck a better ride and makes duels a snap. Only downside is that it does away with the spare tire mount. If you used a tank from a same year Ramcharger, you would have the intank pump setup your TBI truck needs.

Thanks.
I've learned the hard way if ain't broke, dont fix it, . Since I made myself keep this think simple/stock, I dont plan on moving the tank. It doesn't have any leaks and isnt causing me any issues, so Im not gonna touch it. Even though doing so would make it easier for true duals. Im just going to do a single 2.5" and split it after the mufflers dumping out the side behind the tires. And that way I can keep the spare tire as well. If I can get this thing be where I want it, then I can sell my late model daily driver, an '03 Lincoln LS.

I found the pic of the members car that I want to use his color scheme on my truck. It was member BlackWidow69, Exit1965. Exit also rolled his vehicle too though.
Here is Blackwidows ride.

I've heard about that stuff but dont know anyone who's used it. The RR was rolled with Rustoleum and then he spraybomed the gloss black. Im going back and re-reading all 3 of those endless thread to brush up and gather all the tips and info I can before I start on the truck. But its either going to be his color combo which will require jambs and all. Or I will go with the Rustoleum Charcoal gray color in a gloss finish which will allow me to keep the factory grey in the jambs, etc...

looks like you got the dodge truck bug for sure now Roe. hardest thing to do is decide what you want to do..I changed my mind 3x before I got to put the yellow base coat on mine..went yellow at the last min at paint shop. then in the middle kept thinking I should have went another way on color...yellow/black is gonna be hard to pull off on a dodge truck.. but it came out looking great in my book...and I have the only yellow/black superbee 440 truck in my town. boy..those gator flags sure look a long way from home.

Oh yeah, I dove right into this thing. I think I said the wrong color earlier, I meant charcoal gray, for the body, and the accent color will be black. I'm anxious to get this paint done so I can start driving this thing. I'm gonna stick with the gray for now, but if I don't like it, I can just paint it over again, the supplies are cheap enough. Once paint is done, I'll do the bed and rails in black bedliner, and then drive the wheels off of it. One thing I found out is that texans love their football. So I fly these flags to give them something to aspire to. Everyone needs a role model. roe

Update. After putting on 2 thick coats of unthinned primer to the fenders and hood, then sanding most of it back of, I decided to do 1 thinned coat to the whole truck. Full strength it builds quickly which is great for filling small surface imperfections. But too thick it takes longer to fully dry. Also, doing the primer help me get comfortable with the rolling technique. As I went along I got much better at laying down smooth coats and reducing roller lines. There are lines where my coats overlapped areas that had dried already. And I also think that I will see less roller marks on the color coats when the paint is thinned much thinner than I did the primer, and the paint doesn't dry as fast which will give me more time to work it. Pics: Question about this first pic. This guide that goes around the window is old and brittle, and needs to be replaced. Is this the part listed on page 11 of the LMC catalog under "front door glass and components"? ( http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/dc/t.aspx?Page=10 ) You can see the dent I need to fix just in front of the rear wheelwell. Darker white areas like at the top of the fender are where there was primer left after sanding it back smooth The lighter spots are where there is the thin coat of primer over areas that went lower than factory paint (metal/factory primer) After getting the whole thing in primer, I'm still thinking it might look really good in gloss white. But Im going to stick with the charcoal grey for now. I've been debating blacking this out with gloss black, but for now Im going to leave the factory gray. Its in great shape. Only two small spots where the paint was scratched off and there is surface rust. You can see them at the bottom. Im just going to sand those two areas and hit them with some of the charcoal gray. There is a small dent at the first D in Dodge, and another in the center/bottom of the tailgate. Im also deciding whether to paint the hitch black or body color. These are the two holes that I will bondo/feather, then primer back over on the drivers bed rail.

Here is the next update. My first attempt at bondo/body filler. I watched a bunch of youtube videos, read some stuff online and gave it a shot. You can tell which ones I did first, and which ones I did after I had a little practice. All in all, I feel pretty well about it. Those first ones that were kind of globbed on because I was rushing, put in too much hardner, and mixed too much at once, I will sand down to see how they look, then apply another coat if I need to. Also, next time I'll definitely wear gloves. Can you guess which one I did first, getting better At the right side of this pic where the bondo starts, I actually found a little rust through that looked like a pin hole. Cleaned it up did what you see here. I understand its better to weld in new metal, but... now I've got it I'll post some pics after sanding, then primer/sealer, then on to color. I think I have a chance at driving it next Monday.

Props to you for getting your hands dirty and doing the job yourself...it feels good doesn't it..
just a tip from another hobbyist; there are MUCH easier to work with plastic fillers that can be bought (and most of the time for cheaper) from your nearest Automotive Paint Supply store..
Bondo (the name brand stuff); isn't that easy to work with compared to say Rage II Extreme. at least to me anyway.

LOOKIN GOOD!!! thats how I did my first one. jump right in and try it. best thing about filler is you can sand it back off and do it over if it does not turn out right. only way to learn is to do it for yourself. I would have done the same on the roof pin hole. that area is always in need of inspection. same for under the drip rail above rubber gasket on the pinch weld. thanks for the update on it Roe.

Sand three to four inches away from the dent you are trying to fill. If you bondo up to primer it will shrink and show a spot.

Shanker: it does feel good, I've always liked to try and as much as possible so I can learn more. This is definitely a learning experience. This bondo is definitely tough to sand. I'll look into trying another brand once this can is gone. Something easier to sand would be welcomed with open arms.
Scratchin: no problem on the update. You asking about it actually made me want to work on it some more.
Moparpollack: thanks for the tip, I'll remember that as I move forward to try and make this look as good as possible.
Golden Arm: after my first round of filler I know what you mean about the sanding. I'm actually in TX now so you were spot on about the houses. I just can't seem to change my profile to say TX instead of FL.

Well, here is the next update. Its a little behind schedule, but that's whats great about this method. If time constraints pop up, then you can just wait and continue when you are able. This is after 1 coat to the entire body. In spots where coats overlapped, I think Im going to really like the color, its a nice deep, dark gray. I don't think the roller lines will be a problem for 2 reasons. 1. Everyone elses progress pics that I saw pretty much had the same look on the first 2-3 coats. 2. Im getting better at avoiding them all together. I can see bigger and bigger areas without the roller marks as I get better. Finally, I see that I am no bodyman, . I was able to make a lot of dents less noticeable, but definitely not perfect. And I missed a couple of dents as well. But I don't need it to be perfect either, and Im NOT backtracking now to try and fix them. Anywho, heres the pics... There was a really noticeable dent right in front of the rear wheelwell. I will either pull and paint the cowl vent panel, or pull another at the junk yard, prep and paint, then swap them out. When I get full coverage I can see this having a nice gloss in it. Dent in the bottom/middle of the tailgate made much less visible. Forgot about the one in the first D in Dodge. And with all the nooks and contours, this tailgate is a pain in the butt to paint. As of right now the strip at the bottom of the truck will be painted gloss black. May even do black bedliner when I do the bed. This is the bedrail that I patched a couple of holes up with Bondo. Turned out pretty well. Im also think Im going to try painting the coats in alternating directions. So this coat was vertical, Im going to do the next one horizontal.

Coat #2. Im really liking this color. Starting to get full coverage now, and the depth and gloss is pretty impressive with just a natural finish. The coats dry very hard very quickly because of the thinness of each layer, and after 2 coats the orange peel is about the same as my 2013 Durango. Well, heres pics... check out the gloss and reflection with just the natural finish See my shotty attempt at repairing some dents in the front of the roofline. straight on pic a little closer Inside the jamb is factory color with metallic in it, where you see the vehicle reflection is the Rustoleum color. They're close enough to where I don't plan on painting the jams. The run you see at the top of the pic is the only one I've noticed on the car so far. It came from paint that built up and ran down the drip rail. Ironic huh? closeup another closeup. You can see the texture in the far right of the pic. Compare the orange peel to that of the next pic of my Durango's paint. Durango

I was supposed to put another coat on today, but I want to let the paint bake in the sun. I tried today but it has been overcast all day long.
Also, Im at the point where Im supposed to wetsand and then apply two more coats. But Im really worried about burning through the paint with all of these edges and curves, especially on the tail gate. We'll see how it turns out. I think without wetsanding the peel would be too much for my liking, so Im going to try it. I figure that with the wetsanding I will have to do 4 more coats and call it a day. Then I can do the gloss black around the bottom edge of the truck, and Im going to do the roll on bedliner for the bed and bed rails. Last step for the exterior is to try again to track down 4 of the 20" steelies that come as full size spares on the new Rams.

Great news. I stopped next to a body shop to take a look at a dog house that was for sale. Bought the dog house and started chatting with a guy wearing a t short with the logo on it from the body shop. Figured he worked there. Told him about how I was interested in learning paint and body, that I was working on a truck, yada yada and small talk. Nice guy. Turns out he's the owner and he offered to let me come in on the weekends to learn the trade, teach me some tricks etc. I'm pumped, can't wait.

Next update. Here is after coat 4 with everything prepped to do the black accent at the bottom of the body, and the DODGE on the tailgate. Im still deciding on a butt stripe as well. Im leaning towards yes... It was late so I just took these to show the prep work. I haven't decided if Im going to do another coat of gray to the body or not. It looks good but because I was less aggressive with my sanding, there is a pretty good level of orange peel. Not a lot, about equal to the factory job on modern cars. Its just that I know that I can get it smoother if I want to, which will make my final buffing/polishing turn out a better shine/reflection. Im just so ready to drive it that I don't wanna wait. Decisions.... Im either going to leave it like it is, or go back and wetsand with 600 grit, then one final coat. This black should go really fast because its such a small area, I can get 2 coats in per day about 12 hours apart. Then I can move on to the rustoleum roll on bedliner, and I want to have my sliding back glass replaced with a one piece. Overall I think Im leaning towards sanding and doing one more coat of gray with less peel. Oh, and I still have to do the cowl vent. This part was time consuming, taping it up and then cutting the letters out with a razor blade was nerve wracking. I'd never done anything similar to this.

Haha, no I didn't know that. Might have kept me from being so nervous as I cut away the tape. All I kept picturing was my hand slipping and leaving a long slice in my nice paint

Thanks guys. Its been fun learning and trying this method. Best of all it let's me get this truck looking better very cheaply. Right now I'm in this truck for $1500 purchase price and $100 in paint supplies, and about $70 for 2 used tires. It looks really good in person. And because I can touch it up whenever at no cost I won't worry about driving it anywhere or doing anything in it.
As far as the paint its just rustoleum from Home Depot. I used their clean metal primer over the whole truck, the gray is standard rustoleum, and the black is the rustoleum professional. I wanted to get them the same but I had to order the gray and didn't realize it was the standard stuff. But its all worked out so far.
I didn't expect it to look this good but I'm glad it does. I can't wait to see what the cut, buff and wax makes it look like.

Thanks guys. The compliments really make me proud that I did it myself. I can't wait to finish it up and start driving. I'm really hoping to get the bed done after re-hanging the bumpers this wknd, then clean and detail the interior. I did notice though that more stuff seems out of place against the fresh paint. Like the mirrors and door handles. The paint makes me want to order new parts for it, but I'm staying strong.

$11 a piece But as soon as I do I will have to get mirrors too.
speedway has some 4" peep mirrors that clamp on the door edge for $15 each.
then you have to replace the rear view with a billet flame mirror for $35... and then it needs..

I made a little more progress today. It was late so I only took two crappy pics. I got the bumpers back on and put on the chrome drip rail molding. I need to paint my rear bumper, the little flat/step portion in front of the tag. I'll sand it and paint it black. While going on my test drive I starting pouring oil from under the truck so I limped it home. The oil pressure switch took a dump and was pushing oil out the top of the senser where the plug goes in. Luckily O'Reilly's had one in stock. Autozone and Advance both had to order it. I need to adjust the front bumper down a little. I actually need to replace it because of a couple of huge dents on it. J/Y here I come. This is why I like working on older vehicles. The wife snapped this one. You don't have enough space in new cars for an arm, much less climbing in there. Then she thought it would be cool to snap this one. You gotta start them out early...

my youngest daughter has always been a good helper. All I had to do was describe to her what the tool looked like, and what drawer it was in and she saved me many trips from under the truck or sitting under the hood.

Thanks guys. I will post some more pics after I tackle the interior. Cleaning, detailing and maybe dyeing some pieces. And I will likely pick up those nice bumpers from the j/y and some nicer door handles I saw too if they are cheap enough, and finally I want a solid rear glass.
Mopar Truck: thanks for the compliments. That's how I felt about some of the guys before me who painted theirs. If you really want some more tips on the painting use the Google feature in this site and look up "paintjob on a budget". There's three of them and they have thousands of posts on techniques and tips and progress/results pics. It's what I used as my guide.

Ok, I wasn't sure if you had seen them or not. No Roe is just my last name, but my Drill SGT's had fun with it at basic. I've been in pushing 5 yrs now.
For the trim piece are you talking about the piece on the cab, the really small curved piece. If so I pulled it and all of the clips for the rest of my trim from the j/y. If you need one let me know and I can keep my eyes peeled the next time I go out there. I'd just need to know if it's driver or passenger side.

What can I say except what an awesome site and bunch of guys. It is the long piece that goes along the bottom of the door of my 90 LB. This is a pic from when I first bought it: The cargo and dome light is for my 86, I dont know if you can see it in this pic but I believe they are all the same: I bought the 86 first when I first retired a few years ago as a project and dropped a rebuilt 318 in it then the 90 (blue one in the picture above) was supposed to be a parts truck but I got it running like new and its my DD for the past 2 years, then I ended up at an auction and picked up a cherry 91 SB for $1200 that I am going to paint using the roller method after some minor body work and then a few months ago I ended up with a 63 Utiline with a cherry body and a stuck engine for $800. I have a tolerant wife!

I went to the j/y today and unfortunately they crushed that truck already. They never crush them that fast. They also crushed the one that had the mint front and rear bumpers that I went to get. They had a rMcharger there but it was missing the piece you need. They get them in pretty often so I'll check when I head back. Wish I had known sooner as I could've grabbed it when I removed it to get the clips and tossed them all in the bed.
I do have the cargo piece though. Its yours if yo want it. Here's the pic...
The cargo light would be great Roe, I just have not been able to find one locally.

I went back to the j/y and was able to snag that trim piece for you when I grabbed me a grill and bumper. I just finished up with some training that had me away from home for a little while. If you get that PM out to me I can get the cargo light and trim piece to you. Ill post a pic of it tomorrow with better lighting
