What's the difference, if any, between an assembly line oil filter and an NOS dealership parts counter replacement of the era? Should the assembly line unit be spray bombed orange like the manifolds and battery cable to be correct? What's the best repro to use? Thanks!

I've heard that the filters were masked off and only got a little (if any) engine color on the base of it.

What year car are you working on? 1972 and up got a red, white, and blue from the factory. Prior to that was the green textured oil filters.

Do what I did, go to a local sign shop, and show a picture and have them make a decal like the one above, then find a close shade of green paint, and paint you filter. Some of the factory filters had a raised M on the top of the filter. Its hard to tell way down in the engine bay if it's real or not.

A bit of bondo or similar and some artistry and you can have the "M" too

These 2 photos look similar but not exactly.

http://www.iccahome.org/ > 'Engine Compartment' and scroll almost halfway down.

Are these the same filter as above? Don't see any green.

Part number is 1851658.
They are the same green filters that you scroll down to, just a lighter shade of green.
Like a lot of parts these I believe were painted in batches.
In the past I have seen/owned two cases of 12 each and the colors varied in shade in both cases.
I have also owned some smooth ones, exact as the textured ones, print and all except the top M is not as pronounced as seen here, smoothie on the left.
Even the boxes were different shade and the one on left lacked the 10-26-6 reference

I cut the "M" out of a magnetic sticker that way I can peal it off then reinstall it on the next tall napa gold filter before I paint it.. I made up a stencil for the script.. I even add the texture every once in a while but I change each filter every year so sometimes I get lazy...

Picture of Hemi with the filter from a 1968 Brochure.
Somewhere I have a 1966 Plymouth Satellite ad and in the picture the Hemi engine is dangling above engine compartment and has the green filter.
Note the 4 blade fan.

You could sprinkle a little sand while the paint is wet, and then repaint it to get the texture.

Is there any danger running a filter that old?I think I'd be afraid the paper filter element might come apart.

When was the "M" introduced to these filters? Was the top just smooth before that? Or with the "Arrow" logo maybe? Any information/pics of the real early (or 1962/1963 in my case) 1851658 oil filters?

The "real" ones cost so much that likely nobody who has bought one (or more) uses them as actual oil filters. These are bona fide investment grade collector's items.

On the other hand, maybe one of these filters in mint but used condition is still worth plenty - about as much as a Hemi engine, or close to it, you think?
