Has anyone here done any lightening on an OEM block? Some of the bosses, lumps, etc. on the outside of the block look nonessential and i'm wondering how much weight i might lose if i eliminate some of them.

I did it on a Mega Block. a lot of work for little gain. I saved less than 10 lbs. I wouldn't do it again.

I did a 1970 440 block years ago, cut all the side protrusions off inside and outside, cut the front corners off and removed some of the rear trans munt surfaces beside the oil pan and outer tran bellhousing bolts. I don't have a clue on how much it saved, probally less than 10 lbs. I got to see a block professionally lighten years later, it was 440 block that the old Rod Shop had put in a mill and thinned every spot on that block they cold including remove a bunch from the decks They went so far as to remove all the metal behind the cam gear even I know some old Pro Stock racers that where grinding on the side of one of thier blocks with a big electric hand body grinder back in the early 1970s, they said that Bob Lambeck had told them to do that before bringing him the block to work on. The ended up setting and holding the NHRA Pro Stock recod for around six weeks later in the mid 1970s Your imagination is the only thing, and hopefully some common sense also, that limits how much material and where you remove it from when it comes to lightening your block Edited, I believe those old Pro Stock guys got about 40 lbs off of there blocks when done Maybe not, maybe more

Yeah, I wanna know. I've actually thought through it for a while now, but my block is in the car.
Real question is: by removing the ears and motor mount bosses and such, will it weaken the block structure in any way?

I believe that was on the Mega blocks and it cost like $1,000. I thnk the mega blocks weighted close to 100 lbs more than a stock block so for some this was a viable option.

Stock 318. If only it were something more exciting. Well, it will have cam, intake and headers. I have been doing bodywork on my 72 duster and i pulled the engine and tranny to do some repairs in the engine bay. Before i repaint the engine i plan on grinding the casting flash off the outside of the block and heads. I thought i might get a little more serious with the grinder if i could knock off a few pounds for a couple of hours of my time. BTW, someone showed me a picture of the parking lot at Danny Millers funeral .I spotted your RR in the pic. I'm guessing it's been a while since the ole bird has been this far north.

Funny, but true. The lump in the driver's seat would be the best place to reduce weight.
