I am using a Kenwood KDC855HD mounted in the trunk. I used a splitter on the AM antenna to feed it. I ran USB extension under the carpet to next to the console. Along side, I ran a shielded speaker connection so I can use an Ipod or a Zune. I also use Bluetooth from my Android Bionic. I used a Radio Shack IR repeater with the receiver on the console so I can remote control everything with the Kenwood remote. The only thing I cannot control is the music tone settings. Unfortunately, I have to tweak those from the trunk but once I have it the way I want it, it remembers it. In actual operation, the USB connection using a stick with all the music on it does not work as well as I hoped. Using either the Android or Zune is the easiest on controlling the playlists. The USB works as a power supply for the Android however. I have about 150 bucks total in the whole system. I wind up listening to HD radio more than anything else but in the mountains where FM signals get rough, I have all the other options. No glove boxes were harmed in this project. Craig

Had my original 8 track modified by Barrys 8 Track repair. They soldered in a remote IPOD jack and RCA plugs for my Amp, so basically my ipod is going to be hidden in the console. I tested it in the car and it sounds great and looks 100% stock. Even plays the 8 tracks still. Here is a pic of the back of the dash before install, you can see the wires out the back.

How concerned are you with listening to the radio? If you just want to play music from you phone and not have a radio you could get a small amp and use an 3.5 mm to rca patch cord to plug it directly to the phone. Use the amp to power you speakers and the phone for music. You could even put a volume control between the phone and the amp if you don't want to use your phones volume control.
If you want to be real slick, get an amp with a remote volume control and hook it up to a Bluetooth receiver and stream you music wireless. I've thought about doing this and removing, gutting, the radio's volume knob and replacing it with one to control an amp.

I'd recommend a sensibly priced Bluetooth capable receiver with a remote. I singled out Pioneer in this link because their remotes work from about any angle (compared to Alpine and others that require you to aim straight at the unit), opening up more placement possibilities. A side benefit to the remote is that your eyes stay on the road. Here's a good resource. http://www.crutchfield.com/g_300/All-Car...Brand%7cPioneer

I had the guts of my original radio replaced with modern electronics to include an MP3 jack. Looks stock and provides great music.
I want to do this to my 70' B Body 8-Track radio. Who did you send yours to?
There is a guy in beverly hills michigan ( off woodward) that does these. did a 68 barracuda am radio. converted it to am /fm and added a jack for mp3 player. was about $500. and could not tell,a friend had this done, it was about 4 years ago. I'll see if he still has the number.
