I believe they were optional, as I have seen cars without them, although I could be mistaken. Were they ordered as part of a package code, like the V5- body side mouldings or could you order them by themselves? What about the rear bumper guards? Obviously every car got a set, but how did you order ones with the cushions? Coding of bumper guards for both Barracuda and Challenger on the broadcast sheet is confusing. Is there information to be gleaned from the broadcast sheet for these? Thanks for your help everyone.

Correct the bumper guards were OPTIONAL on a '70 Challenger.

All Challengers received the rear chrome guard (integral to the bumper/car design), but when/if M85 - "bumper guards" $23.80 were ordered - the fronts w/cushions & rear cushions were added.

Dan, are you saying that if a car has front bumper guards on it, that it MUST have rear bumper guards with cushions?

That was the theory. I don't believe that there was a separate way of calling out the rear bumper guard cushions -- they were only triggered by the ordering of the fronts.

Dan: Your first broadcast sheet pic. shows M81 as "front bumper guard". Would this be the code for just front bumper guards? The rear ones being standard, so in this case M81 would be front guards, and the rear bumper guards would have no cushion. M83 would have cushions on both front(obviously) AND rear. Am I correct in my analysis?

Broadcast sheets were for ALL models.
1970 Plymouth e-bodies had rear bumper guards (no cushions) STANDARD & fronts (with cushions) M81 the ONLY OPTION (N/A 'Cuda & N/A w/A21 or A22).

1970 Plymouth b-bodies had front bumper guards (cushions bolted to the bumper) STANDARD the ONLY OPTION is rear bumper guards (with cushions) M83.

1970 Charger b-bodies had rear bumper guards STANDARD the ONLY OPTION is front bumper guards (with cushions) M81.

1970 Charger R/T

You're right. I got my bumber guards as part of the Body Protection Group, as shown on the attached dealer invoice.

Here's my summary:

70 Challenger:

The rear had a standard down-hanging chrome guard, with no rubber pad. The only bumper guard option offered was the M85 package, which added rubber pads to the standard chrome rears, and also got you the chrome front guards with rubber pads.

Neither front chrome guards w/pads, nor the added rear pads were available separately.

A05 Protection Group included the M85 package, as well as vinyl bodyside moldings and door edge protectors.

71 Challenger:

The M85 package was again offered. NO A05 package offered. M85 was N/A with either the front or rear colored bumpers.

As for the M81 shown on the broadcast sheet, it applied to other car lines, but not Challenger.

Disclaimer: Info above taken from the factory coding guide that I have, dated October 69.

Your results may vary...

A little off topic, but was a rear rubber insert available on a A22 rubber bumper 70 Barracuda/Gran Coupe/`Cuda rear by any chance too ?

I always assumed my car had them because it was an SE, I've had it since 1978. But there are no M8x codes on the broadcast sheet. It's first 8 years were rough, hit in front and rear, so it must have gotten a transplant front bumper before I got it. That's one expensive part I don't need now.

For the '70 Barracuda line: I find NO reference to the rubber inserts Front or Rear existing (rubber inserts became part of the '71 M85 Barracuda OPTION)

M81 was NOT AVAILABLE on 'Cuda (BS) because of the STANDARD "Fog Lights" or with "A21"/"A22".

Is your car a late/Sept-early/Oct car with a broadcast sheet printed on a 1969 "E" series form? If it is you need to look in the boxes that would be in the correct position for the '70 codes.

All '70 Challenger have M83 for the rear bumper guards that were STANDARD.

Thanks Dan
That is weird that it still shows E for Extra on a GC and Barracuda, you would have thought they would put N/A under each model.
