Ok, after a recent post about the sound and styles of MOPAR starters got me thinking a little. I'm trying to save some money, plus i kinda like the distinct sound of a mopar starter. I have two working ones (i'd rebuuild just for peace of mind) and was thinking about using it on my 10:1 440. I plan on running headers, I'd love TTI's but don't know if I'll have the money for them. I know the bigger starter won't come out without taking header off and jacking up the motor. I just want to know if anyone runs these starters anymore with headers and how they work. Will they start a hot motor with 10:1 compression? Will heat wrap help out? I don't want to get stranded from a hot starter. I know there is a factory mini starter that fits from a 90's dodge pickup but I haven't had good luck with NAPA starters and don't feel like buying one at dealer price. In all honesty, I'll probably run a new style mini starter but i just want to know how crazy of an idea it is now a days to want to run an old school starter on my car. Either way, I'm totally redoing my electrical system and alternator part of my restification so either way, the starter will have new cables, and good power going to it. Thanks in advance!

i have a mini starter on mine, and still have to lift the engine and drop the header to replace it, (which i did a week ago), but it is a hemi.

i remember the days of my hemi gtx, all those decades ago. it was a daily driver. bought it and sold it with the same starter, about a 4 year period. cranked that 10.25:1 engine happily, even with a lot of timing.

i would use it. you have it, and like the sound.

i had headers on my gtx as well, and so the heat never seemed to be an issue.

i say go for it.

My stock 70 383 used to eat rebuilt Chrysler starters.

I am dropping a mini on my 74 slanty Dart. I have one on the 72 slant Duster.

I'll keep the others as spares. Future big money date coded cores!!!!

I use dealer purchased Mopar Mini and no issues. Also, have the TTI headers, 440, 10 to 1, and don't have to lift or pull anything to change the starter.

I have a stock starter on my 9.7comp 360 with headers. I don't have a problem with heat soak and it turns the motor over no trouble when hot. The same one has been on there 3 years without a hitch, and it was on a slant six for I don't know how long before that.

I run a used, old style starter in my 472 Hemi and no problems in 3 years so far. I like the sound of the old ones too.

Thanks guys, I've got two that I can rebuild and I just like the sound of them. Plus it'll be cheaper than a new mini starter. I refuse to buy one from NAPA for a new age dodge because I've had bad luck with their rebuilt starters and I don't want to pay dealer price for one. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't totally crazy and that others are still using them!

I don't have luck with rebuilt stuff anyway. I generally check my used stuff and use the best one in the heap.

where can you find original starters? is it a junkyard item, or does someone on the board sell them?

I was just lucky enough to have two orig. motors that still hade them on there. The 440 I built was running when I bought it in a '66 newyorker.

We use a stock mini starter on my boys Dart that is listed for a 3.9 V6 truck. Been on the car since 1997. Ron
