I can't answer that question directly, but I will give you my experience. I put a Meziere 35 GPH pump on a Roots blown 528" Hemi. I drove it on the street, in central Florida, and never had an issue with cooling. I don't know what you're combo is, but unless its something super exotic, I would bet you don't need 55 GPH.

Is the 55GPH worth the extra cost?
You dont say what the combo is and if its street or not.. I've been running the 35 for a long time on a few different engine(all SB for me) and run one on the street with no issues

No street, 540 Indy Maxx block 13-14 to 1 compression with B1 heads. Just don't want to buy the 35 and regret not getting the 55.
For racing only... no problem whats so ever... just put some lube(even water soluble oil)in it to lube it... the first weekend on my first one I had just water in it.. it tried to stop.. a bottle of water wetter took care of it and thats the one I run on the street now

Have you ever heard the phrase if you win come right back to the lanes? He is not asking about running a heads up car or nor is he a career test and tuner.
It is not unheard of for us to be hot lapped, especially in the super classes, which I beleive is where he is planning on running eventually. I have frequently run three rounds in less than 40 minutes. Heck we had one race that was rain delayed and ran the entire race in 4.5 hours, all 6 rounds. If you are racing in an environment when you have to be consistent to the .001 you need to keep things in the car at the same consistent level to be able to repeat those numbers. Whne trying to keep 1000+ hp engines cool enough to repeat to me there is no such thing as to much radiator or water pump in those situations.
FWIW my radiator is a double pass scirocco strly from BeCool. We can have my water temp completely cooled down to nothing in less than 10 minutes.

First off, the pumps are rated in Gallons per MINUTE, not hour.
I think 35 would be plenty, I run a moroso thats rated for 28GPM. Think about the smallest orfice in the cooling system, is it big enough to flow 55 Gallons Per Minute? Doubtful.
Is bigger always better, sure, we all tend to over build certain things.
Just run E85 and you wont need to worry about temperature.

Its all about the radiator to how fast the engine will cool... if you have a 100 gpm pump with a postage stamp radiator its gonna take time to cool it... if you have a large radiator with 35gpm pump it will cool in minutes but still needs a fan to help move air across the radiator surface... temp differential between the ambient and coolant temp on the radiator fins

I run 55 for the same reason Al runs it. Do I need it, will put any size restrictor it over heats. The block is full filled it needs to move as much water as possible. Do you need the 55 I wouldn't run anything less but that's just me

Thanks Al, there is no chance of moving too much water through a small radiator is there?
Use a restrictor or a gutted t-stat to controll flow...........
Seems like at some point moving water to fast across a hot spot would lead to unknown cavitation issues.
Cavitation only occurs when theres too much restriction on the intake side not return side. Not allowing the water to move freely.
