Even though I'm don't spend too much time at the track ( although I'd like to ) , I use a tach. I usually have a full exhaust under the car and sometimes have a hard time hearing my engine when staged next to a dragster of other really loud engine. Back when I had a 4 speed, the first time out, I nearly killed the engine because I think I dumped the clutch in my 440 roadrunner at what I would guess was around 1500-2000 rpm. The next time out was next to a green mustang pro-street, gave it some gas and burned the tires through the first 2 gears . Next run I taped a tack to the steering column..... was much faster on the 3rd pass That was over 20 years ago, now I'd like to get rid of the monster tach ...

Actually at the starting line I dont need to hear the eng as I just look at the tach there and come up on the converter to about 2000. Thats about the only time I really use the tach in a normal pass. Sometimes I make myself look at the tach so I can see where I am shifting at. When I raced my 340 Dart four speed I usually only used the tach when launching. I would bring the rpm's up to about 5000 as the tree started and then on the last yellow let the clutch out as the gas pedal went to the floor. I was very consisdent in that low 12 high 11 Dart also. Ran 12.17 three passes in a row one night. To bad I rolled that car but I have to admit I like my 63 better. Ron

20yrs ago I had a Challenger with a magnum 383, 727, and 3.55's in it. I had big tires on it and didn't have a tach, but it didn't sound like I was going through the traps with much rpm so I tried a pass where I kept it in 2nd through the traps. That did sound more exciting! Got my timeslip and it was within a 1/10th of the time when shifting to drive! I think mph was about the same too.

I rarely use my tach , which is making me think about going to one with a playback mode. That way I can see what rpm`s I`m shifting at and going through the eyes at. Definitely slows the car down to shift (`Glide) into high by the redline .At launch I use my MSD launch RPM module set for 5400 and I can feel where peek torque is and shift there. Works every time .02 consistency ! chryco

put a chip in the msd box with the rpm you shift at, when it stutters ,shift, very simple, after awhile you will shift with no delay. anytime you change something you start over the process. by the way the first shift is the most critical for consistent ets.
That would not work for me as I dont have MSD on my car. I use the MP orange ECU and a Mallory dist. But like I said I just seem to always shift when it feels right to me no matter what I drive. Ron
I did the same with my max wedge back in the 70s Ron, never could get a tack to work so i just drove it. when i did get one i didn't use it, when i finally did look i was right on 6800 every time. Never even looked at any gauge except in the pits

So, as I read through this thread, I'm suprised by how many guys don't look at their tach during a run. It begs the question: what are you looking at or paying attention to? (I don't mean this condesendingly, I mean it literally). I can understand that at the top end, you're focusing on the opponent, the stripe and the relationship between the two and yourself. but through the gears, what is occupying your attention?
Now, I realize most of you guys have your hands a little more full than me with my 11 second footbrake street-car. but typically, I'm looking downtrack to keep my line, then when I know I'm getting near the top of the gear, I focus in on the tach to make sure I hit the shifter at the exact moment.
(Sorry to Hi-Jack, Ron. But I think the question is relevent to your post.)
