while I have everyone here.... what black was on the tail panel? just flat black?

Organosol, just like the bubble.

I just painted the tail panel black on my cuda and clearcoated it with Glasurit flat cleatcoat...gonna do the same with the bubble I think. Easier to keep clean than organosol. Besides everybody says organosol is not right from any of the rattle can versions so....Im just going for something thats easy to keep looking nice and clean. Its just a 71 cuda CLONE so im not going nuts with those kind of details.

With all the discussion organisol VS. argent on the 1971 e-body SHAKER bubble.
There will be every example conceivable due to 40+ years of "known" originals, NOS examples, & documented restorations - RIGHT or WRONG. Was it all due to factory or dealer mistakes/shortages/changes/etc.?

What was the designers intent (wild was in full swing while these cars were being drawn up)?. What did the penny-pinchers implement during the 12th hour (as the musclecar was dying and money was getting tight)? I've developed a little theory as to what it was intended to be.

1971 (ORIGINAL INTENT)
'Cuda w/body color painted grill = BLACK SHAKER
'Cuda w/argent grill = argent SHAKER
Challenger w/argent grill = argent SHAKER
Challenger R/T w/black grill = BLACK SHAKER

This "ORIGINAL INTENT" would've required 14 different SHAKER bubbles (w/engine call out emblems installed) to be on-hand in-quantity at the factory waiting to be installed on an e-body as it came down the line.

I will add my 2 Cents from what is sitting in my garage.

1. 1971 Cuda, Hemi, Automatic, Dana, real car, GY9, Argent grill, painted side mirrors, black bubble, with very smooth black paint do to being washed a million times. November 1970 door sticker

2. 1971 Challenger, hemi, four speed, dana, FC7, real car, shaker, painted mirrors, silver bubble, race car now but have pictures of car first day bought home from Raceway Chrysler, Rexdale, Ontario. June 71 door sticker.

Put on what every bubble color looks the nicest to you Dave. With a silver bubble, it looks nice with certain exterior colors and certain color interiors. Black Bubble basicly looks good with any color.Nothing is set in stone in 1971 for color of bubbles. There are a few things that can be followed but someone will always come up with an odd ball. I would paint the bubble with the best paint that sticks to it and is an easy repair. You will likely be taking the bubble assembly off and on the motor quite often. I have experience in this and something or someone always ends up scratching the bubble.

SEM Satin Trim Black would be the easiest to keep clean.

If it's a red car, with red grille, I would just paint it red.... since they came that way in '70..... I know it's a '71 but I would go Argent if it has the Argent grille...

Bob should of kept that old Black Hemi Challenger, he sure wanted that dash pad I had for the Challenger when he was restoring the car. I find Chrysler started using Argent Bubbles in around April to the end of the 1971 Build on all Challengers with shakers. Have heard a few reason why but you hear a lot of things over the years about Mopars, some true and some not and some become the truth.

From what I know, Argent complete assembled units with nameplates intact, were sent back to Fram in bedsteads of 60 in 1969 when the run of 1970 Challengers with shakers ceased for a period of time.
Challenger shaker option resumed again in spring of 70 but when the 70 model ended there was still a bedstead or so of argent assemblies sitting at Fram.
71 model year saw Chrysler implement the change to black scooped assemblies beginning in August 70.
Sometime in the spring of 71, whether it was a shortage or just a vendor decision, Fram decided to use up existing stock of argent from that leftover bedstead.
There may have been some argent assemblies used on earlier Challengers as well but I know of quite a few 71 factory shaker Challengers with argent scoops, built in and after April 71.
