Thought I would post this as a two fold item,
1) to provide hope to those with a trashy pitted ashtray
2) to hopefully find and easier way, for the future

Attached is a picture of what I started with, a bit rough, once disassembled I spent countless hours (ok, maybe 40 or so) making little rubber blocks and block sanding as best I could, to remove pits from the inside surfaces. I know it's not perfect, but I was going insane trying to sand the thing.

Then I proceeded to have issues zinc plating (I do my own plating) and plated it three times, stripping it the first two times because the finish was pretty sub par. The exterior always seemed to cooperate but the internal pocket must have been shielded from the current, once I got the amperage up and used a conforming anode the results were at least acceptable.

So what do others do?? certainly there must be an easier way.

Merry Christmas to all

And here is how it turned out, not perfect but good enough for me to use and be happy

that looks pretty nice to me! nice work for 'shade tree' restoration! i feel your pain on trying to sand the inside, i eventually gave up and rattle canned mine. looked like that's what i did so i just keep it shut. it's just a driver anyway....

That looks pretty good to me... Did you remove the tray from the door? If so,what did you use to replace the rivets?

Yes, removed the rivets and bought replacement semi tubular rivets. I had the various headsets from other assemblies, all bought from Jay-Cee Rivets, only issue is the headset would't fit on the inside of the ashtray to flare the back, so we made a small flare tool using the purchased head as a guide, on a home style lathe. Cut it to sizes that worked and managed to swell the fasteners from the inside like the factory. I suspect the factory had a nice squeeze gun to make the task easy.

Glad to see no one has posted a "Hey dummy, they make a perfect reproduction at . . . " yet.

Just can't imagine everyone goes through this process to restore one . . .

Even if they made a Chinese repro, I'd still want to restore the original or have someone do it.

That looks awesome. Im doing mine right now. What you did with the rivets is what I was figuring to do.Stripping my ashtray in rust remover right now.I read on one of Scott Smiths posts about how the rust remover took perfectly good zinc plating off of his minty dust shields, much to his dissappointment. So it should work just a s good on my nasty ashtray. For some parts on these cars there is just no "easy way" to restore them.

On my 70 Super Bee (I know not an E-body) I searched junkyards and my parts stash until I found a tray that was not super rusty, which I think is one that was non-smoker used. I removed it from the housing, sandblasted it, painted it with Mopar Performance Musclecar Wheel Paint (part# 4529876) and installed in the housing from my car. Came out pretty nice, if I do say so myself

I have also used the Wheel Paint on the mast of bumper jacks and it looks pretty close to the original finish, in my opinion anyway.

Rust remover will remove the rust, unfortunately the pits are left behind. If you plate or paint over pits they are still visible.

As I stated, sanding inside the ashtray while trying to maintain a flat surface was a bear. Between the beads and the bends it's a near impossible task. I had to make a few rubber and wood sanding blocks to attach paper for sanding. Lets just say I'm THRILLED this is behind me.

As for the rivets, like many used in MOPAR assemblies, they are semi tubular rivets available through Jay-Cee rivets. They have information on their site to help you determine correct rivet length. I suggest keeping your shank and head from the drilled out fastener so you know for sure your ordering the correct head style and shank diameter. They also sell the tool to upset the rivet tail, only issue is its to long to fit in the ashtray, and I didn't want to cut mine in half, so we made one. Not as nice as the purchased one but worked for this application.

As for plating, it's a hobby in itself.

I have, in stock, hundreds of the correct rivets for most applications used on E-bodies and some B-bodies.
If anyone is interested, PM me.

including: Wiper motor rivets, washer pump rivets, starter relay rivets, ash tray, E-brake handle rivets, challenger grille rivets, etc.

How about those funny looking rivets(?) on the hood latch? They have little dots on the heads. I guess you would need a press and something that replicates the dots.

I recently did the ashtray myself for my '70 Challenger. I wasn't too concerned about "restoring" it to factory original. I just wanted it to look close. I disassembled it completely. Stripped the paint from the tray (previous owner painted it black). The inside of the tray was heavily pitted, so I partially filled in the pits with Bondo; then spray painted it metallic silver (also painted the flasher relay bracket silver). Painted the door, and frame with SEM Trim Black. Installed new rubber bumpers; and decided to install an original "used" light (previously did not have one). I ended up using small stainless screws/nuts to reattach the back of the tray to the door, and used an aluminum pop-rivet to attach the side of the tray. I think it came out pretty nice, even though it's not "accurately restored".

Thats awesome with the vintage butts and tabs. I've thought about taking a picture of a bunch of butts and cutting it out to fit my refinished ashtray.

There was an old pull tab beer can wedged between the back seat when I tore mine apart, not thinking I pitched it, would like to have it for the find box now . . .
