What stall speed convertor are you guys using with those cams?
I thought about buying one of those cams for my 383 but it's in front of a 1962 trans and the stock convertor doesn't have much of a stall to it.
it works with stock low stall TC just fine. also stock exhast/highway gears ect..

If I/one were to switch to a MILD Hyd roller in an LA360 could I order correct length pushrods and re use my stamped steel rocker arms? A roller is soo superior but the conversion exceeds $1200. Using stamped OEM arms could save about $400.
Keep old mopars alive.

I'd have a camshaft made to whatever specs you need....and not worry about some hyped-up name. Comp Cams will walk you through the process.
Hughes gave it a cool name to a well designed cam. It's only a name. The cam works and works darn well.
How about "Voodoo" cam? Why did they give it a gimmick name?

IMHO the name is pure marketing, not gimmick. The name should be exciting plus give some clue as to what the product is about. So Voodoo is an exciting name that hints that there's something about this cam family that seems magical.
BTW, kudos to Hughes for getting Whiplash cams to market and having them work as well as they evidently do. Can't let Comp have the market!
To me, the gimmick is a cam that has a particular "sound".
I'm more old school, how the engine sounds is not very indicative of how it will run on the street. Take for example the chevy pickup with a 350 and a 250 degree at 50 lift camshaft and a pair of Flowmasters. It barely idles, it sounds mean, but on the street, performance sucks. I hear them all the time in my backyard as they accelerate away from stop signs. How can I say performance sucks, because they usually are running an automatic and I can tell how long it takes between shifts.
R.
The last car that had an interesting sound that I immediately thought "hot" was a Shelby Mustang clone with a slightly nervous sounding solid lifter cam. As it sat there idling at 900 rpm in the lane next to me I understood immediately that it was quick. And as he banged through the first three gears running away from me, I knew I was right.

Anyone running one of these in a 440 Six Pack build? Curious if it has enough vacuum for the Six Pack to work good? Trying to decide between this one and the Mr. Six Pack cam for a pretty much stock 440 Six Pack.

as long as it is the roller cam block you can...if it is not a roller block then a retro set of lifters/PRs/adjustable rockers are a must.
I came in around 700$ for the first roller cam upgrade I did. that's for everything down to 10$ worth of paint.
I ran a luntai voodoo roller cam 60710 with comp 901-16 springs
used all stock roller cam valve gear. stock roller lifters, dogbones, spider, pushrods, shaft mount non-adjustable rockers
my roller lifters were later model (91) that were oil thru with hollow pushrods and oiled thru head to shaft rockers and thru lifters/pr.
swaped over to the whiplash 318 roller cam with the same valve gear and comp 901-16 springs and have had no issues
the lunati 60710 voodoo is almost identical to the whiplash but with a tight LSA for a choppy idle(voodoo was stock smooth idle)
so yes there is some coin that can be saved swaping to a street roller cam.
I just drove the whiplash with the 5 speed and I am even more impressed and very happy with the whiplash in my 85 stepside.

I just had a 1974 360 completely rebuilt for my convertible along with new pistons with stock compression,3 angle valve job on the heads, '68 340 intake, Edelbrock 650, TTI headers, a nice adjustable valvetrain and the Hughes Whiplash 360 cam. I haven't heard it run but my guys told me it sounds healthy on the break in stand. Should be in the car later this month! I will let you know how it runs and post a video.

Yup, sounds familiar. Got one in my 383. I think you're going to find that it gives great performance as well as a lumpy sound.

For an off the shelf no-brainer cam (read: non-custom), i'm definitely sold on it. All i have to do now is decide whether its going in a 5.9L Magnum or my ol' 383...
that was my problem...now I have 2 small block roller cams and 1 BB 440 flat tappet cam.
my next project is all stock low milage 5.9 magnum engine running a intake/carb combo on it.
the roller whiplash is intended for a magnum headed engine..Hughes said they had not run it in a pre-mag LA 318 engine so not sure how it was going to act AND I am using the comp 901-16 springs I ran the lunati 60710 voodoo roller with. (whiplash roller and the lunati 60710 voodoo roller are almost exact specs.)
well it flat out works. so much I have 2 pre-mag roller cam 318s with it and a magnum headed engine is only going to be more fun.
I have not tried a small block flat tappet whiplash, but only can think it is just as bad to the bone.

yea, these cams are VERY gimmicky...
bone stock 5.9 Magnum. 2bbl M1 EFI intake edelbrock small tube headers and SCT tuner.
add one 5.9 Whiplash cam (222°/228° @ .050, .544 lift, 107 LSA installed at 104) and suddenly I'm putting down 285 hp to the wheels (nearly 100 hp more than stock) with more HP left on the table...my stock TB was causing me to build up to 3" of manifold vacuum at WOT above 4,000 RPM. Truck was running 14.2 1/4 miles at 97-99 mph with traction limited 60' times of 2.2-2.3 With traction, that 4,000 lb street truck would have been into the 13s.
not bad when bone stock it was lucky to run a 15.2
Gimmick or not, they flat out work for cheap "junkyard motors" that are still low compression, stock heads, etc.
Curious... on the Hughes site it clearly says NOT to use these cams in stock Magnum engines, because the CR is already too high. And that if you have a stock Magnum engine you should opt for a wider LSA version.
Did you guys put these cams in stock engines? You say you did, so were there any issues? I'm assuming that the fear is that the close LSA and a higher Magnum CR raises the dynamic CR too high? or is there no issue? 107LSA and 9.1:1 on pump gas doesn't sound like a recipe for disaster to me...???
Sounds to me like if this works without issue (against their warning) you'd end up with even more power.

I did notice I had to back timing back from a 12* with the voodoo roller to 8* to get the pinging under control with the whiplash.
Hmmm... you had me excited till this part... So its not quite optimal... but will still work. Hmmm... I dont like the idea ov bumping the timing back to make too much CR work. Then again maybe with my light car it wont be an issue...
Kinda getting excited about this smallblock biz...

I don't think it is from the cam or comp ratio but rather the fast burn swirl port heads. I have a cheap reman autozone points dist in it so a good recurv would be a good help. so when I have it up around 10* -/+ the dist pulls well past 40*-50* of advance. so it is more a tuning problem IMHO, plus I have a well used JY engine with some bolt on parts the 600 eddy carb is pig rich, the dist needs recurved, I need to run better gas ect...ect...ect.. BUT! for the 800 bux I have in it, this 120,000 mile, never had the heads off JY 318 sure is a brute for daily street duty.

and I for got to mention I had to do the same thing with the voodoo cam going from a 360 headed 318 to a #302 headed 318. went from 14* back down to 10* going to the closed chamberd heads. so when I went to the whiplash I tried 14+ then 10* and found it liked it around 8* for base settings. could be the goober tuning it for me.
