I tried to do a search with no luck. Best I can tell it's low gloss or satin black. What say you? The quicker the better I'm blasting now.

Thanks, Kevin

The third post down is a picture that shows the horns on a T/A.

Thank you, I have lots of pictures including that one and the DVD of the 172 mile T/A, not to mention my horns stay had some good paint on them. I am just bad at judging the correct sheen, especially after years of use or photos that could change the appearance due to lighting and flash. I think I am going low gloss and if necessary lay anither coat on tomorrow if more info surfaces tonight.

Thanks again, Kevin

Those look great but more satin than the low gloss of mine prior to restoring. Could be the picture making it appear that way but who really knows, maybe they were straight gloss (low grade of course) back in the day.

I always wonder what the real sheen and color was on all these components when new. Even survivor cars are subject to oxidation/degradation of finishes for all plating and painting. Remember this was 40+ years ago now.

We all spend TONS of time trying to figure out what are correct finishes and often follow the accepted correct finish by the masses even when we have proof otherwise on a good unrestored part in front of us.

I whole heartedly agree! I really like the way the low gloss came out, looks REAL close. I'll know more tomorrow when it dries completely.

i thought they were dipped in gloss black enamel which would dull to a low sheen after a while in engine bay heat. you can clearly see the dip line inside the horn and it would create an air lock so the paint wouldn't get in the guts of the horn. you can also tell the angle that they were hung to do this. sorry for throwing a spanner in the works.
all the best
frank.

I agree, dipped, at least once

Amazing that this is now coming up as "common" knowledge (to the informed) yet when I tried to search it I found nothing. As much information as there is there is still a lot missing or at least not as easily accessible as you would think. I guess that is what separate the men from the boys.

Now a new thread on the paint dipping process.

If you do them in a gloss black engine enamel you would be amazed how close them will dry to the right sheen. This is on a 1969 Charger but should give you some idea

as well as the dipping in enamel black don't forget the white inspection mark on the adjuster screw.....
