I am building a 318, .40 over, and 302 heads. This is going into a 66 sport fury. The car weights 4000# ?? Looking for suggest. on a hydraulic cam. The car is more of a cruiser, and won't see more than 4,500 rpm's. We just want torque, and a rumble out the pipe. So which cam, springs, would be good. And what stall converter would be good also?[727].... Thanks, Matt

Matt I cannot offer any cam/spring/tc advice but if you have not yet made your piston selection yet I highly recommend you get an appropriate set that will give you .035-.040 quench in the CR that is right for your combo.

need more information on compression ratio, induction, exhaust, gearing, etc.

For a basic mild rebuild with a lower compression engine, stock gearing/converter, etc.
something like the Comp XE256-10 should work good.
It specs at 212/218 duration @ 0.050, 0.447"/0.455" lift.

If you have over 9:1 compression and 3.55:1 or better gearing, and a higher stall converter than you could use a larger cam.

Stock 340 cam should work pretty good.

voodoo 60400 or 60401, or a comp XE250 or 256, or similar duration engle or hughes cam, comp #901 springs should work with all of these

Check the summit brand cams, cheap and will giove you a little more pedal than the stock 340 cam. If you use the smaller cam your stock conver should work if you go w/ the larger You might need a 2400 or so. Both cams should work w/ standard dual mopar springs.

I am not sure what gears are in this car. It is the stock drive train behind the poly. I would guess that it's in the 350'ish range for gears. I plan on freshening up the converter, and the trans while I swap out the poly. I may lean toward a solid cam also. It will get a dual plane intake, with a 650 edel. carb, maybe headers. It has cast flat top pistons, [not sure what brand, came with the used block]. So I guess when I get the short block together, I can then figure out what compression it will be at, and then get the appropriate cam, springs, head gaskets, etc. Thanks for your input, keep it coming. Matt

if you're open to a piston and/or piston & head swap, KB167 pistons set up at 0 deck and either closed chambered 302 or magnum heads would make a very nice combo. do a search for hotroddave40 built an engine like this with a stock 273 solid cam, and it had crazy torque and delivers upper 20's for highway mileage in his A body with a lockup 904 and 2.76 gears. he's ~10:1 with short cam timing but the excellent quench characteristics from the 0 deck flat top/closed chambered heads allows him to run 89 octane without pinging.

what yr on the 318 block?

is it a roller cam block?

are those aftermarket pistons?

need to know how far down the hole the piston sits,so mock up the crank and 1 piston to get a start

if you go solid on the cam you will need adjustable rockers/push rods for the head you will use

dont for get oil isssues if you go mag heads on the older LA blck

I don't think you can use a LA 318 w/ a 318 ploy trans can you? You will need a 727 for a Small Block or a 904. Then you will also need a new drive shaft. Headers are a cheap easy way to pick up performace and MPG's (if you care)

a eddy LD4B would work good for the #302 heads and has small ports and runners for the 318 heads

mine 318 works good with an LD4B on the heavy truck with an edddy 600 carb, voodoo roller cam, stock high stall with 3.23 gear and headers

nice running little 318

the LA engine will bolt right up in place of the poly

the hard part is the throttle pressure rod from the carb to the tranny

the bell crank bracket is diff between the poly and LA engines

should be able to use all the pullys/damper and wp and t-cover from the poly along with the dist

that old poly prob has a forged steel crank that would work in the LA block also

I did it in a 65 ply fury along time ago...just dont remember what I done for the throttle rod to the tranny

I was 16-17 yrs old and prob didnt even hook it up

An LD4B would definitely work good with those heads because the runners will be a tite fit. As far as a cam selection, I say go with the 340 4 speed stock cam. Not as expensive as the newer cams, but still a great cam to have and has a nice lope to it depending on the mufflers
