Well, in my failed attempt to fix my leaking steering box on the old 89 w350 I need some insight. Here are the details. The only place my box was leaking was at the input shaft. The box was tight and worked fine. I ordered a new input shaft seal kit an installed it properly without disambling the box (i only removed the borgeson joint an a snap ring and the two old seals), but now the dang thing still leaks at the very tip of the input shaft. Attached is a picture from the web with a circle around the very tip of the shaft where my box is leaking. The previous owner did install a borgeson shaft and I see no sign of leakage on the side of the input shaft, only at the very tip. Any ideas, anyone before I buy a reman box? thanks moparts

I don't have an answer but do have the same problem. I KNOW mine has had a rough life and need to go to a Borgeson shaft for my body lift but like yours the damage maybe already done. If the input shaft wants to move around under load there's not much a seal can do.
I hope someone chimes in with more experience.

I am baffled by this, as there is no reason for fluid to be coming out of there. Lower in the shaft where the seal rides, totally understandable, but not up there.

Did you have the engine running with the coupler off the box and see the fluid coming out from there?

If you look at an exploded view of the steering box it shows that the shaft is actually hollow.. When I put the Borgeson shaft on my RC the instructions stated very plainly not to drill the set screw to deep otherwise there would be a leak..

I am truckless..

Huh, didn't know that.

And before I read your post, I looked at his picture and said to myself it almost looks like the splined section is pressed on. Guess I never looked that close at mine when I had it out--Or I just forgot (more likely).
