My '82 RC still has the original auto hubs. Last winter it felt like they didn't engage a couple of times, so I bought some Superwinch manual hubs (400518). I am hearing conflicting advice about what is required to install them (replacing the auto hubs). Can someone set the record straight for me? I can pull the truck into the garage to do the work, but I don't want it in there taking up space for days if I tear into it and discover I need additional parts, special tool, etc. It would be nice to have everything lined up first. Thanks!

Did you read the hubs directions? If you bought them new there should be everything there along with the instructions. 30 minute job with basic tools.

82 didn't have cad yet, just those auto locking hubs that should be easy swap to manuals.

First of all, they came with NO directions. I went to their website and found an instruction sheet that was very basic and pretty much no help. I emailed Superwinch, and their response was "if it's a Dana 44, they'll work". All I was asking was if anything special was needed when converting from auto hubs. If there were instructions, and they told me what I needed, trust me, I wouldn't be wasting your time.

Let me re-phrase: Has anyone personally converted from auto hubs to manual, and can tell me what is involved? Thank you.

You pop the cover pull a snap ring(around axle shaft) and there should be a lock ring(outer part of internals)After those are removed you should be able to pull the auto hub parts out. Install the manual hubs insert outer lock ring and install snap ring(may have to push on axle from backside to have it prtrude enough to install snapring) Install cover

Automatic hubs. Stock on my '82 RC. Engage when you shift into 4WD. Disengage when you shift into 2WD and then back up a few feet. From what I've been told, most were troublesome, and I'm in the minority to still have mine 30 years later. Like I said, I have never worked on them. When I first got the RC years ago, I knew a guy who was experienced with 4x4s, and I paid him to service the hubs. Now that they're acting up, and I don't know enough to service them properly, I'd just rather replace them with some simple, reliable manual hubs.
