I have some of Frank Badelson's engine paint to spray. Its a acrylic enamel paint. I have two questions.
Q1- Tech sheet specifies usnig the DTR reducers per the temperature, I have some DT870 on hand can I substitute the two. The DTR reducers are Acrylic Enamel reducers but the can of DT does not say for use with this type of paint.
Q2- The mix ratio is color 8 - reducer 3 and hardener 1. The supplier of the paint said do not use the hardener it will be too shiny. So question is how do I modify the mix ratio. Do I just substitute the hardner with reducer?

Thanks for the help, I am really new at this painting stuff

In the past I've always used the DTR reducer, but suspect the the DT870 would work. As far as modifying your ratio, no need to substitute for lack of hardener. Just go 8-3 and spray it.

You can, but the result is not nearly as durable as catalyzed paint. The catalyst actually "cross links" the molecules. That means its literally a different finish, and is far more durable. Harder, more chemically resistant etc.

Do NOT use DT reducer, it is for urethanes. Chances are you will ruin your paint in a quick and fast hurry. You need the appropriate enamel reducer.

As noted, it will air dry with time. The hardener makes it much faster but is not necessary.

That's what I have found from google searches but I wasn't sure if it was just a PPG sales gimmick. I will call tomorrow and see if I can get the appropriate reducer. I would imagine I can use anyones reducer as long as its for acrylic enamel, right.

Correct, I believe any acrylic enamel reducer will work fine. I've used DTR in Dupont just fine. As long as the system is the same, you shouldn't have any problems. Always try to mix a little first to see if it has any weird reactions. I've had paint curdle like bad milk because of old or wrong components.

This morning I had to go to the USA to buy the reducer. Nowhere here in Canada sells this stuff. It was banned a few years ago.

Next thing is the mix formula. The mix ratio is color 8, reducer 3, hardener 1. Since I'm not putting the hardener in how do I modify the mix. The store told me color 4 and reducer 1. That is a lot less reducer than the mix with the hardener. Does this make sense???

Don't change the ratio, just don't add the hardener, like said above.

We used to use lacquer thinner also to thin acrylic enamel , it works.
