I have broken mounting tabs in the plastic trim and bezels all over my car, but for now Im focusing on the tail light housings. No budget for new tail light housings at the moment, so I'd like to repair my own.

They are pretty solid except for the mounting holes and tabs that screws/bolts go through; most are snapped off. How do I repair this? I read an article on using sandable plastic glue, but this is assuming you have all the broken pieces. I do not have the tabs that snapped off. How do I make my own? is there bulk abs plastic I can buy and cut/shape into the pieces I want then glue them to the housing? What type of adhesive/glue do you guys use for this work? Any special tricks or tips for me?

I've also read about using fiberglass resin, and that not all cement/resin/glue works for all plastics, which makes sense. My tail lights are from 71, was hoping that I wouldnt have to go through the trial and error with different products if someone here has done this type of repair on a 71

Body shop fix is to clean it with plastic cleaner, scuff the repair area or sand lightly, and clean again. Use 3m semi rigid plastic repair (2 part you have to use a gun for) and squeeze it onto the repair area. Shape the glue by pinching it in wax paper and form it to the desired shape. Sets up in 30 seconds, hard in an hour to shape further or drill. Best fix would be to score another set of taillights and cut parts off. JB weld will work also with good prep but will be rigid. I've seen about every kind of glue tried but these are about the only things that seem to last. Once in a while the ol' Krazy glues work also.

After I posted this I read another Mopar Muscle plastic repair article. I decided to try the SEM products they list. For the broken piecs Im missing, Im going to try lexan sheet (i dont know which thickness yet) and cut out the shapes I need. They said it can be heated and bent for angled shapes.

I wouldn't hesitate trying it as besides adding material it melts into the base plastic making a strong weld. Trick will be to get the texture embossed into the glued area.
