montessa OP member Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 151 North Eastern New York State	I have been loading my Charger into my enclosed trailer by driving it in and then crawling out through the marginally opened drivers door. I am not getting any younger so I figure it's time for a winch. My car weights about 3500lbs without me in it. What are you guys using and how big a unit do you think I would need?

The rated weight of a winch is a VERTICAL lift.. so since you arent lifting it vertically and most likely will never see 45* a 2000# winch is more than enough... I buy cheapo winches from Harbor Freight and they last for years(I winched mine in for years backwards so it had a better load and fit better)... the cheapo finally started slipping the clutch on it and I bought 1 one size bigger.... I've never payed over $200 for one... and I have one on 4 trailers that will haul a car

Cab_Burge I Win C Joined: Aug 2003 Posts: 43,223 Bend,OR USA	If you plan on keeping it awhile buy the best one you can afford I have used most of the cheapers ones years ago,wore or burnt them up Not now I buy the Super Winch S4500 now I borrowed a friends open car trailer two weeks ago to retreive a 1966 Dodge Coronet Deluxe with no motor or trans, the cheapo harbor Freight 3000 lb rated winch barely pulled it up the ramps with a new battery with 12.75 volts in it My S4500 Super winch would never slow down pulling my 3450lb Duster into the Pace 24 ft Shadow enclosed car trailer including pulling it up and up and over the dove tail as well Your choice Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

AMPS are HP... if you want a less pricey winch that has less AMPS/HP you can always add a pulley which slows the pulling SPEED but DOUBLES the load... I have never seen the reason to buy a $400 dollar winch when you can add a pulley for $10 but it does take longer to pull it in(double the time) but if your like me you pull it in so far and you turn the wheel to get it right in the trailer and I'm not really to concerned if it takes 3 minutes or 5 minutes to pull it in... usually by the end of the day I dont mind taking a extra few minutes and I can dial down... JMO

If your pulling vehicles out of the mud or that have flat tires then you need a lot more winch. I had this 1500# winch sitting around that was bought for a electric snow plow that wasn't being used. So took it home and tried it on my tilt bed car trailer. The pintle hook mount that I mounted it on weighs more than the winch does. It pulled my BB challenger up no problem with a single line. Then when I doubled lined it, it was really strong enough. So my thinking all these years is to keep my trailer and what put in my trailer lightweight. I'm not one to mount wooden kitchen cabinets in my trailer. So I like the small lightweight winch for my trailer or RV. I take mine and stick it in a one of my RV storage doors in case my car breaks and I can't drive it up on the trailer. I wouldn't want a heavy winch on board since I have never used it yet, it's only for a emergency for me.
