I am looking a a set of Harland Sharp rockers for my hydraulic cammed 383. I am wondering how they are adjusted. Do you adjust for proper preload or for clearance? I do not see how you can do both. I have always just run stock rockers on it. After losing my cam a couple weeks ago it is apart and figure no time like the present to do a set, I just do not want to mess anything up. Thanks for the input.

Typically they are adjusted about 1/2 turn past when the have no slop just touching the plunger.Unlike a solid where they have a spec such as .022 and say .019.Rocky

This is the simplest and the most accurate method taught to me 40 years ago. it has never failed me

Hydraulic lifters can be set, hot or cold, pumped up or not using this procedure. It will also work for an initial set up on a solid lifter motor.

For Hydraulics, most manufacturers want .020-.040 preload. If you have a 3-8 x 24 adjuster, 1” divided by 24 TPI = .0416” so 1/2 turn beyond zero lash, will = .020 , 3/4 turn will = .030.

I like to start at the LF corner of the motor. (exhaust) Turn the engine over in the direction of rotation until the intake valve for that cylinder is almost closed. You can now adjust the exhaust valve for that cylinder.

Loosen the adjusting nut until the pushrod spins freely between your finger tips. While spinning the pushrod slowly tighten the adjusting screw, when you find zero lash your will feel a definite resistance to spinning the pushrod. You may want to repeat this a few times to get the “feel”. Once zero lash is found, add 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn and lock the adjuster.

Move to the next valve in line (intake). Rotate the motor in the direction of rotation until the exhaust valve for that cylinder just begins to open. Repeat the above adjustment procedure.

Repeat the process for the remaining cylinders.

Summary:

Adjust the exhaust as the Intake is almost closed

Adjust the intake as the exhaust just starts to open

Make sure that what you think is ) lash is not when the lifter plunger it seating on the bottom of the lifter bore. I like to wiggle the push rod in till there is 0 gap in the between the cam, lifter, rocker arm and valve stem with the lifter on the base circle of the cam. Now give the adjuster 1-2 turns. I don't like the spin method on a fresh install because a lifter with little or no oil in it has very little resistance and it is very tough to feel.

Definetely set the lash with the intake and valley pan off.

The feel thing amounts to more fails than successes for first timers.

How big a cam the exhaust opening and intake closing may be the most accurate.

back off and holding pressure on the pushrod toward rocker when it just pushes plunger off retainer spring add 1 to 1.25 turns for pre load another .25 for aluminum heads.

You know you will need pushrods too??

I do know I need new push rods. I just was not sure if you set the preload or for clearance. Thanks for the tips.

I always adjust my lifters to a zero lash. I get more power, less valve float and your engine will rev quicker.
