Does anyone know of a chrome drop base air cleaner that will take a factory pie tin and still look ok? I've seen a few at shows that seem to work ok, but the owners couldn't remember what brands they were.

The ones I've found so far won't work as they don't have any groove for the pie tin to fit into, so the tin just looks tacked on on top.

I would like to use a late 60's unsilenced piece, but with an RPM intake I don't have the hood clearance.

RPM intake? Is it an Air Gap? I have an Air Gap on my 383 in a '68 Road Runner and I have just enough hood clearance.

Those 383's had air gaps before air gaps were cool

there is a ford motorsports air cleaner that's the same diameter as our unsilensed and has a drop base. I don't know the part number but its the generic aftermarket ford motorsports air cleaner that a gagillion ford guys end up putting on their rides

here is a pic comparing stock 68 unsilenced vs. for motorsports bases. I had the same issue as you with a performer RPM and no hood clearance.

What a minute...had a brain freeze...

I have the Perf. RPM on my 383 Road Runner...with the unsilenced air cleaner....just enough clearance. It sits up quite a but higher than the stock intake.

I have an Air Gap on a 318 in my Diplomat...barely enough clearance but a dual snorkel 70's air cleaner fit it perfect.

Hmm, it may work then. It's for my Mirada, but I just assumed a stock air cleaner wouldn't work. If it fit your Diplomat it may fit mine too, although a Mirada hood slopes down a lot more than a Diplomat.
