Stumbled upon an old mopar with a big block and my mind blanked while trying to ID the engine...

Car in question is a '65 sport fury convert, factory big block car. My impression is the big block engine options available were the 426W, and 383 2bbl & 4bbl....and all would have been turquoise, correct?

The only numbers I could get at were on the ID pad located on the driver side of the engine, leading me to believe it's not a 383 (only the RB engines had their ID pad on the front driver side of the block, in front of the intake manifold, right??).

I've attached a couple pics...including the ID pad, the carb ID tag, and the whole engine.

I'm thinking it might be a swapped in 413..??

361 was also available in a 2bbl only version in 1965. All B and RB engines were turquoise. The 318 would have been red. Sport Furies had the 318 2bbl as standard equipment.

AV-MP- is interesting. "MP" meant maximum performance on the 63 and 64 max wedges. The "A" could be for 1965. The "V" could be for 1964. Someone may have stamped it twice. I have found left over 426 max wedge parts put into production late 1964 and 1965 cars. I once found a 1964 426 wedge marked "A42" meaning 426 street wedge. Took it apart, it had a 1/2" factory swinging oil pickup, 426 max wedge rods and crank. The rest was street wedge and this engine was never apart. Get the casting number off the block. that will show if it is 413 or 426 block. I see it has an AFB on it.

Hmmm...thanks for the heads up.

It's an oddball car for sure. I have a '65 Sport Fury 318 car, so I noticed some of the oddities on this one right away.

For one, it's a canadian car, and they had some weird things setting them apart from the american cars (sport fury's got the fury III door panels, etc.). Highly optioned...power windows, tach...had a crazy looking period correct reverb switch under the dash that I had never seen before. Emergency brake release also had an integrated light which I hadn't seen before.

Would've been an amazingly cool car new...it's rusted horribly now. I'm pretty sure it would break in two if you tried to move it.

I'm really curious about that engine now...hoping a few more people will chime in.

Bumbalawski basically nailed it. That's not a "typical" engine stamping so decoding it entirely may prove pretty much impossible. If you come up with a casting number that is right for a 426 MW then the next check would be to pull a head and see if the block has bore notches.

Thanks Scott, appreciate it.

I'll have to make my way back there and try to find the casting #'s. I can pick up the whole car for cheap, so I might just do it.

I've been wanting to swap in a big block for a long time, but collecting all the parts is a bit of a daunting task...picking up everything at once is a definite bonus.

If this is a Canadian built car then I believe all engines were red. I can't remember which year they changed, but 64's were still all red.

I know they did some whacky things on Canadian built cars...This color looks like the same red that's on my '65 318 poly. So no matter the engine size, were they doing all engines red?

Does it have a pcv valve or a draft tube, I've seen numbers similar to those on red engines from early CBody cars and Imperials.

It could be a RB 350cid

Up until at least 1964, but I'm pretty sure the red colour was used on all Canuck cars including 1966.

A is 0.020 over bore

M is 1959
P is 1960
R is 1961

MP is max wedge

426 TMP is 426 max wedge

MR 413 is a 1960 413 this includes 300E

S41 HP AND T41 HP are max wedge 413's

This may or may not help.

I think the 350 was just a B block.I had one in a 59 Fury that it wasnt supposed to be in.It was all OE and an early order car.I guess it was a left over.I was the third owner and the original buyer never touched it since new.A guy I went to school with had it 2nd and he never touched it either.Sold it to a guy that bought my 47 Ford coupe as he put it and the 3 speed in it.Rocky

The 350 was the first B engine. It was followed by the 361, 383 and 400, all dimensionally the same except for bore size.

I believe the 413 was the first RB. The RB383 was a stopgap engine, couldn't keep up with demand on the B engine IIRC. But as much as it gets mentioned here, they are really few and far between. So 413, 383RB, 426, 440 in that order.

DO buy the whole car, for cheap. That engine stamping is indicative of something that may be valuable, may be just an oddity.

But thanks for bringing it to our attention.

If you were REALLY lucky, the cylinder heads wouldn't have soft plugs on the ends.

And whoever would confuse that engine with a Poly needs to go to Remedial Mopar Engine Identification class.
