Last March Brian @ IMM posted his
Budget 400 Build Well, I purchased the shortblock and today we finally got it on the pump. The cam is still the little Thumper 227*I/ 241*E @ .050 .524"I/.508E" (1.6 rockers) 107 LSA. I had Brian massage my RPM heads and he supplied the PRW 1.6:1 stainless rockers and matching pushrods. I supplied a crank scraper and Milodon road race pan for the bottom and an Offy tunnel ram and a pair of AVS carbs for the top. A Jegs MP knockoff distributor for spark. The headers were Brian's TTI 1-7/8" dyno headers.
The carbs were seriously lean to start with, so I got to be an honorary IMM employee, pulling the tops and re-jetting the carbs. The third time was the charm, as Brian deemed the fuel curve acceptable. The best #s of the day
489 ft/lbs @4700- thanks ram tuning!
472 hp @ 5300
The air valves still needed some tweaking- they were opening too soon and causing a hesitation, my headers need a ding to clear one of the spark plugs so we couldn't hook them up
, and we didn't spend any time with the timing.
Brian was perfectly willing to keep going, but My Dad and I had a 3+ hour drive home and I was satisfied with the results. Personally, I think it's pretty damn strong for a stock stroke mild cammed 400.
Thanks to Brian and Fred for your time, putting up with me and Dad and building me a great bullet.
