Anyone ever took one of these to 170ft.lb. on a pinion nut?

I'm sure it will go once

Seriously I have run facilities known as Auto Hobby Shops, a self and guided help garage if you will for the troops, in the Air Force for years and seen those larger Harbor Freight sockets used for much higher torque values than that over the years for FWD spindle nuts and Honda balancers with are at values in excess of 400ft/lbs without failure. IMO you will be fine.

Can you grind the OD of the socket down to fit?
I have a bunch of them like that for pinion work.

I found pinion nut on the Dana 60 in my Demon loose at gateway msp, and the highway to St. Louis was backed all the to the race track so I just went to the Granite City Oreillys and rented a 33mm, same as a 1-5/16, for $10. It was a nice HD impact socket so I did not take it back, just kept it and put it in the trailer tool box.

So there you have it ... when you need a tool, just go and steal it.

Auto parts tool rentals are meant to be that way. Rent and return or keep it if you wish.

For some reason I don't think it's supposed to work that way. If it was $10 for the rental and a $40 deposit I'd agree.

It IS meant to be that way. How much is one socket worth?
It's just a little more honest way to get a socket for a few hours than buying it, using it then cleaning it and returning it, saying "I didn't want it after all."

Yep, thats the way it is around here too. You put down a deposit that is really the Value of the tool. Its a Free rental, but if you want it, you can keep it and they keep your payment.

They will tell you that right up front, Auto Zone, Oreilly, and Advanced auto, all have that policy here in Canton, Ohio.

This is way off topic, thanks to a moron that makes a post calling someone a thieve that he knows nothing about. Why don't the mods kick people like this off for posting on topics that have nothing to do with the topic.

Stanton:
Well folks there you have it, I have all the proof I need. They do let MORONS on these sites!!!!!!!!

Justinp61:
Yes it is meant to be that way. They charge you the retail price + sales tax and if it is not returned in a couple days they order in a new one. I know this for sure at AZ and Oreillys. They offer the rental program to keep the real thieves from buying a tool using it and returning it. if the renter decides he likes the tool and wants to keep it, he has already paid for it. I just had a conversation with my local Oreilly parts store manager [also a former AZ employee], about this and he says rent and return for a 100% return of $$$$ or keep it if you wish.

My post was letting the original poster know he can use a decent tool for free or buy it for a reasonable price rather than pay for a pretty much useless HF tool.

BTW if anyone is at the same race track as me and needs a 1 5/16" socket I have one in the trailer that you are welcome to use, except Stanton

Love the hate , guys. Love the hate.
Or if I may paraphrase my late Father....." The three of youse....."
I have a Craftsman in 1/2' drive that is much thinner than an impact socket......you can buy them one at a time in 6 or 12 point and they aren't all that expensive.
Seems to me I got it after getting a 3/4 " drive with an adapter for something or other. Harley primary drive ?........but they didn't have the 1/2 " drive in stock at the time.
I do have a couple 3/4" drive sockets for when I need to stand on the end of 6" of pipe to reach spec.

Racers, I've had great luck with harbor freight impact sockets over the years. The last craftsman tools I bought were china made, I figure if I'm going to buy china made tools I might as well pay china made prices.

I've never rented tools so I guess I'm not qualified to comment on it. The last big socket I bought was well over $40.
