So I was in the shop this weekend trying to get the pistons out of my KH calipers. Basically what I did was put different thickness and width piece of plywoods in between the pistons and shoot compressed air into them. I got 7 out of the 8 pistons out, but the last one seems to be stuck in there pretty well. It didn't want to budge forward at all. I know Chrysler had their own specialty tool to pull the pistons out. Is there anything I could order on Amazon real quick or buy from a parts store that will help?

I plan on cleaning up the pistons with some degreaser or cleaner as well as the inside cavity of the calipers and install new seals (old ones were torn and had dirt build up). I'd like to get this done asap. So I can reinstall everything and get the car on the ground. Thanks for the help!

Does it move inward into the bore?

Might be rusted fast inside the bore. A little PB Blaster and maybe some heat might dislodge it.

Had one piston that was rusted inside, had to get a rebuilt caliper.

If it is not too hard, just put the other 3 pistons back in the caliper, and hook it back up to the car, use a block of wood to keep the 2 pistons from moving, and step on the brake pedal. Use the hyraudlic force to push the stuck piston out....since a liquid will not compress like air does, you have more of a chance of getting it out.

If it still won't move....and if you can still get new pistons easily ? (not sure, never checked ? ) you could always drill a hole in the stuck one and tread a bolt into it, and just tighten it against the inside of the caliper to help push it out.

I haven't gotten to the point of installing the MC yet and won't get there for awhile so that won't work. Still fiddling with the pedal assembly. They sell pistons on rockauto. Centric has them for about $6 and Raybestos has them for about $13 plus super shipping.

If possible put the piston back in next to the stuck one and hold it in place with a clamp , grease the seal if you can reuse it , and try forcing the stuck one out that way ?

But as stated if the bores are rusty you will have to get the bores sleeved.

I was able to do that with my pieces of wood. I had all 4 pistons in the bores (no seals) and shooting the compressed air into the caliper and as far as I could tell I wasn't getting any leaks around the pistons. Most of it, if any, was just back trailing out of the inlet where I was shooting the air. I think the shop air is somewhere around 60psi, but don't quote me on that and I can't change the setting.

Does it move at all or is it just locked in there tight ?

You may need to restort to hyd. pressure to get it out of there . do you have a brake rebuilder in the area ?

It was locked. Idk much about any brake restorer around; however, I've never checked.

Just use them as cores and get some rebuilt Centric 4 piston calipers. Can get them at www.rockauto.com or a good parts store. Shop around. Will be cheaper than having someone rebuilt yours.

Any difference between Cardone, Raybestos, and Centric when it comes to quality? Can I send these in as cores without the pistons or will I have to reinstall the pistons?

Edit: Just checked and they don't have one of the Centric calipers in stock. ~$150 for new reman calipers.

If you buy from the local parts store you can just take the cores in without the pistons installed. Just put all the parts together in a box or bag. They don't care if it's in one piece.Check for prices on other brands.

Rockauto is going to cost me about $160 after I get reimbursed for cores (assuming it cost $25 to ship the cores back to them). The local parts stores are going to cost me about $260 and that's after the cores are returned.

I'd keep working on them for $260. Have you tried shopping around to other parts places to get near $160.

I checked all the major ones (Pep Boys, Autozone, NAPA, O'Reilly, etc.) and that was pretty much the baseline price. I don't know of many mom and pop parts stores near by. I just called the local mom and pop store near me with amazing Yelp reviews and they said they could get them to me this afternoon for $145 each + tax...

I think I'm just going to order them on rockauto, seat the pistons back in my calipers, and send back my cores. I don't really want to fiddle with this too much longer and this seems like the cheapest way to get some remans. I might try getting new bearing races to press into my hubs this weekend as they didn't come in when I ordered bearings before. Car may be on all 4's again by next week. We'll see.

Contact me via PM. I have a complete KH setup for sale. The calipers have stainless sleeves, pistons & crossover tubes. They were done by Stainless Steel brakes 20 years ago. It will be the end of your stuck piston problems.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I can get both from rockauto for $160 after the core reimbursement. At the local store it would be approximately $290 after core reimbursement.

Rockauto: ~$63-65 each with a $56.25 core charge

Stores: ~$120-145 each with a $30 core charge or less

I think I read somewhere to try grease. Put a zerk in one hole and plug in other, put piston back in and clamp with c-clamp then use grease gun. Hydraulic pressure may do it.
