The A bodies all look to be converted to big bolt wheels and run early Shelby wheels.

Excellant observation!

That where the large bolt pattern KH 4 piston front disk on 68 Hemi Super Stock Darts and Barracudas came from. Bob Tarozzi helped some on the 66 Team Starfish afterhours Trans Am team.

how about some Mopar F-bodies?

Don't know if these cars are actaully F-body based. I doubt it. Maybe Kit Cars???

These cars ran in the Kelly American Challenge. Sponsored by Kelly Girl.

1981 IMSA Kelly American Challenge race at Portland International Raceway.

Some AMC's runnig. Buzz Dyer btw helped on the '66 Trans Am team of Ron Grable. He actually bought Ron Grable '66 Dart and ran it at the 1970 Trans Am race in Riverside.

If you look through pictures from the whole '66 Trans-am season you'll see both the stock looking steel rims and the aftermarket rims. My guess is that some of the teams switched over mid season. Jason Ernst said those are Kelsey Hayes Mag Star wheels. Whether the Shelby rims and the ones the Mopar teams used looked the same or were actually the same is a question.

The steel rims probably have an extra center welded in based on their experience in ralleying the Valiants.

The other question about the SBP hubs really needs to be asked of Scott Harvey and Tarrozzi. For '66 it looks like they would have had to use the K-H calipers, and probably a rotor of the same dimension. Those would be too easy to spot if they changed for something much bigger. But was a BBP or SBP, and if it was BBP - How did they do it?

PS> Tony AtoZ's website has pictures from his time with Group 44 and late substitute driver in '70. Link to my homepage. I'll cut and paste it later. Lunchtime is over!

Harvey had a KH make them up a special run of disks with the changed pattern and center register diameter. The Mopar Action article on Scott Harvey mentioned this. I don't think the casting is changed, just machined different.

Tarozzi couldn't remember exactly where he got the disks from when I asked him. But it was not something he had to design up just for the super stock cars. But he did say he helped a little of the Team Starfish deal, but really wasn't exited about it. Tarozzi has a incredible memory, but I was just asking him about something 45 years ago out of the blue and he could not confirm nor deny. It seemed plausible to him.

The cleverness was underway by '66, so it wouldn't surprise me if there were BBP discs for A-body cars with the same part # as the stock stuff, only handed out by a Chrysler rep or shipped to the shops.
Here's a pic of Buzz Dyer's Javelin @ Monterey last year; he's owned it forever, and IIRC it was a Kaplan car. They let the quarters slide, but made him remove the dry sump (not period-correct for year of body), and not far into the event the motor blew, just as they did back in the day. Buzz was NOT happy.

Steve,
But its the hub and disk. And if you rcall, Mike was told that there was some sort of failure with the spindles and small ball joints. So it seems odd that they would put even more development into a custom hub for 10 cars or less cars unless they resolved the sprindle and bj issues with metulurgy or reinforcing.

Speculating here - A plausible off the shelf solution would have been using B-body spindle and upper control arms. Then use the bendix hub and machine the K-H disk to mount to it. The big question is how hard would it have been to mount a K-H caliper to a b-body spindle. But all this could be done in-house.

I'm not saying that Harvey's quote in the magazine is wrong. Just that maybe they got the years a little mixed up. Maybe they were brought on line in '66 but certainly by '67-8. Those hub/rotors are listed in Rally bulletin as 2836148 (right and left the same) along with 8.75 axles 2513750/1-M (right & left) for 1/2-20 studs on 4.5" bolt circles. Rear drum 2534173 required to go with that.

My recollection and understanding of the homogolation papers is that it was the dimensional specs that were most important. As competing manufacturers used the virtually the same brakes (Corvetes, Mustangs) I find it hard to imagine they would have switched to the bigger and heavier Bendix calipers and rotors as a 'cheat', but might have if everyone else was being given a similar allowance.

The links to Tony Adamowicz's '66 and '70 Trans-Am pages on my
Barracuda & rally, road racing autox page are to his old website.

He now has new website http://a2zracer.com/Welcome.html with a link to the old website and an index to the revised version. Note the old website was cowritten with Gary Wheeler (Chief Designer for AAR) so is worth a visit for that too. Also for AMC fans, Tony also drove Trans-Am in '71.

Very cool site, thanks for the link. The 312P sound clip (lap of LeMans, page 35) is great!

I have some pics of an AAR tribute race car being built a few years ago that follows the original cars modifications very closely. I'll post up some pics when I get home. They duplicated the roll cage, front and rear suspension and so on. The owner is involved in SCCA and has some connections so he was able to get accurate info on how the cars were built originally. Also, here are some pics I got off of Gurney's site before he took the picture pages down

I'm currently building a "inspired by" Trans Am car with my recently purchased 73 Cuda. I'm very interested in see more of these pictures as good detailed pictures have been hard to find. But thanks to everyone who is posting as I love these photos!

Ok here is my favorite photo set of vintage trans am cars including a couple (not enough) of the Cuda , a couple of the Dart, and more of the Trans Am Challenger.
