Seems every motor I get, ends up needing cam bearings.

What brand tool do you guys use, or recommend? Budget friendly of course

I have this one:

Works well, all bearings perfectly located.

Thanks guys

Another quick question. Does the motor HAVE to be torn down? I'm hoping to just be able to have the cam out. I've heard both ways. I usually just have the bearings installed by the machine shop. Motor is a 1976 360. Thanks

In a high RPM app where oiling mods are a consideration you might reclock the bearings going in & drill a 1/16" hole in the bearing for the crank to cam vertical passage which is plenty of oil to lube a cam & any cam bearings that feed a head drill them 1/8" or better yet drill even those to 1/16" & feed the heads externally from the oil passage port at the top rear of the block (T from it)

Keeping in mind the kind of info I get from most of your topics showing some of the level of your 'technical advancement' and 'financial means' you have, I would just head over to the exhaust shop and have them make a few of pipes stretched to the size of the cambearings and use that to hammer them out and in with...

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

We all start somewhere I like the pipe idea. I have several things laying around that look like they "might" work. Just hoping to buy the right tool one time, and be done with it

Are you sure the cam bearings need to be changed? The journals are a low stress area & a fair amount of wear ain't no big deal. Sounded like you're just wanting to change cams & maybe some of the shiny area on the cam bearings has you concerned

Second from last toward the rear has chunks missing. If it has just list it's shine, I'd still run it. Motor is temporary, and only has to last a year.

A good friend thinks we might be able to feather the edges of the "potholes" and run it as is.

The dilemma is that this cam is junk. Major damage on the journals. I don't want to get another cam and have it go in a week. I'm fighting a 318 that likes to wipe cams. Always on the same lobe. Don't want that to happen to this motor. I want to put it together and have confidence in it while building the other motor. This motor may eventually end up in another daily driver vehicle, so it needs put together right.

check the lifter clearance on that particular bore. Might be an undersized/tight bore from the factory. Clean the lifter & it's bore with brake kleen then lightly lube the bore/lifter with WD40 & set the lifter down on the lobe & lift it up with your finger & release it & it should fall back onto the lobe with a resounding "thunk" & if not the bore is too tight & the lifter cannot rotate properly & the lobe will wipe. On the chunks of cam bearing missing I would suggest not smoothing them so as to not reduce the contact area but I am not there to see what you see so I am just speculating

I bought mine from the snap on guy like 25 years ago, works good for many different motors.

Then about 10 years ago I bought a package deal with many different engine building tools on Ebay. One of them was a "knock off" cam bearing tool in a big plastic case just like mine was in. But it was not the same quality tool. I guess it would work but not near as well as my original snap on unit does. Cam bearings are easy to mess up and I wouldn't want to rely on a sloppy tool to help put them in.

I think mine was branded as the Powerhouse (Comp Cams) one, but looks to be the same as the Lisle listed above. Wish I had seen the Amazon one, could have saved $100.

I believe you will find that the snap on, matco ones have a heavy, larger diameter driving shaft that fits in the cone centering device very snugly.

The Ebay one I got had either a smaller diameter driving shaft or a larger ID cone that didn't fit in the cone as tightly and being the driving shaft was either lighter or smaller my hammer bounced off of it more than when I used the solid original tool which is heavier and drives better. My experience using the 2 tools that appear the same.
