I look at what people told him to get...this post it going to get updated a few times....He tells me this was his harmonic brand new http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pfs-80013 The engine have 350 miles on it...not only is it not black anymore, the white lines are gone and it has the onset of rust beginning...needless to say I couldnt time the engine. I had to remove the balancer so we can clean it up, paint it and then affix timing tape to it..How can a balancer lose ALL its paint in not even 500 miles?

....and this was the camshaft http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mel-mtd-2/overview/ for a 6000 lb car....have a single plane intake, 3000 holeshot, 3.23 gears and a holley 750 double pumper....whoever told him to purchase a .440 lift cam needs to have his skull inspected. I had a 440 lift camshaft on my slant 6... Worse than that....the last "mechanic" removed the thermostat so it didnt overheat, leaned out his mixture and the plugs were black as coal, and removed the kickdown linkage because "it doesnt do anything special....its a gimmick"...He saw me gapping the champions and he asked me what I was doing....and that he has never seen anyone gap a plug before in Greece....i feel all alone here

I have learned : ANYONE can buy a bunch of parts and build an engine. It takes an expert to make all those parts work together in harmony. Your buddy is fortunate to have you to help.

Oh I am...I told him that before we started...he is a big boy though, can't crawl under the car or anything but the step by step tuning procedures...he is going to do them with my tools. I would limit his engine on horsepower so he can grow accustomed to it bit by bit but the camshaft he was told to get will pretty much act like a governor for him until he decides he wants to bump up to the 509 cam.

You get what you pay for...81 dollars, what do you expect?

for a 6000 lb car....have a single plane intake, 3000 holeshot, 3.23 gears and a holley 750 double pumper....whoever told him to purchase a .440 lift cam needs to have his skull inspected. I had a 440 lift camshaft on my slant 6...
Nothing wrong with a cam like that...nice and tame and will make for a nice smooth cruising engine. For a 6000 lbs car, it will need the low end that cam will give. That being said the rest of the parts are mis-matched. With that cam, I'd stick with the stock converter or maybe 2000 stall max. Also, a dual plane intake would have matched that cam more than a single plane which will hurt the low end that cam is optimized for.
Also, if the plugs are soot black, it is (was) running rich, not lean. Whitish plugs indicate a lean condition.

I know about the plugs...I was laughing when he told me the other guy leaned out the engine and the plugs were black...Told me that the other guy didn't know his head from his...well..yeah...I would have liked to see a Performer RPM on the engine, a 2200 stall converter, and a slightly larger cam...at least a 474 Purple shaft. Gonna leave the single plane on there for now...down the line...maybe he has more cash flow and wants to change it and he can sell the old Holley Intake to a schmoe
