Does anyone have a good pic of a 71 R/T grille? I am looking for the colors and what gets painted each color. Any help would be great. Thanks

The black sections of the R/T grille are actually natural, black plastic. Silver accents are done with the untextured light argent paint as used on rallye wheels (not the center caps).

Unless you're going for full OE, most folks use a satin black trim paint such as SEM for the appropriate sections, and it is a better match for the blackout on the headlight bezels.

I've got this saved in my computer as a NOS Grille.

The headlight bezels don't have the black tape stripe on the edges.

But I think later NOS R/T bezels didn't have the tape like production line pieces did. Please confirm or deny this.

There was a thread in the resto section that really went into 71 Challenger R/T head light bezels with that original tape stripe that cover half on the outer edge of the molding.

You should find that thread. And the might be some better grille detailing picture than those small picture I posted.

Both bezels on the right was NOS right out of the boxes. I painted the ones on the left to match. I used lacquer paint that is the interior black that was used on the dash and many other things inside the car. I got the paint number out of the factory service manual. It was a exact match.

The pair on top is correct I beleive, the one on the bottem left I painted first as practice and to see if it would match. It is not masked off properly.

Another picture of the first one I painted(not masked properly). It matched the NOS one perfect color wise.

I painted lot's of interior stuff with the lacquer paint.

First attempt at painting the grill, it's not right.

Missing some argent paint in this picture.

I added the argent in this picture, top and bottom.

Here's the paint I used, both numbers are straight out of the FSM.

71 Challenger R/T tail light bezels were originally all black out and only silver in the tailight lense inset area.

Two original paint survivor 71 R/T's

Yes you are right or so I have been told. I also have seen more than one car with it trimmed in argent.
I knew that when I painted mine and prefer the argent on top to breakup the blacked out tailend.

I also still have a original 71 RT 340 tail light bezel from a car I wrecked in 1978 that was original, that has the argent on top. I still have it and kept it and didn't use it on this clone. I can take pictures of it, it has the top edge trimmed in argent. So that's why I painted mine that way because my original was like that and I like it better that way. Still not saying it's right or correct.

Not saying it's correct, but here is a car that was displayed by Ken Mosier from the Finer Details that I took pictures of.

The yellow car is not an R/T. It's a regular Challenger.

There are some other detail issues with the orange 71 Challenger too.

Are you sure Ken Moiser restored that car? And even if so, what were the instructions and budget dictated by the customer?

BTW, Challenger R/T and Challenger with performance hoods do not get fender mounted turn signals. IIRC, there was a restored EV2 383 '71 Challenger R/T sunroof in Canada that looked just like that car.

I never said he restored it, just displayed it back in 2005.

The only reason I showed the yellow car was because he was standing there detailing them and the rear bezel on the yellow car appeared to have the top edge trimmed in non textured argent also?

Checkout this POS "restored" 71 RT grill. I bought it from Fuelinjectedfish from up in New york or somewhere back around 2004. I know he was a member here for while.

A bad bad E bay deal. He packaged it terrible and the one end got broke off during shipping. I glued it back together and then did not use it. He used what looks like some flat black BBQ grill paint on it. After I got that POS I knew I could do better than that myself.

Checkout this nasty paint job. There is no argent anywhere on it and he even painted the snorkels!

IIRC, that was Joe Balboa. I remember people that lived near him would not buy from him. I think he is still around boards under different name(s).

Did you see A Gallant 71 RT car this past weekend at Carlisle?

His rear bezel was trimmed with argent at the top and he was saying how correct his car was restored to OEM.
web page Click on the third screen down with the 440 6 pak motor, it's all the way at the end of the video.

Yea I guess it is funny years later. I plan to strip that grill someday and repaint it and it'll be good for a nice driver.
Too bad he let it get cracked/broken, it was a nice grill minus the paint job.

Do you know if the yellow 71 was original So Calif. Car?

Doesn't mean that particular piece is right. I don't see pre resto pictures of that trim on the site. Car came to him with complete thorough color change and pretty hammered. Edit: (didn't notice molding in final pic of the car)http://www.alangallantautomotiverestoration.com/1971-440-6-Challenger.html He says he's found the original owner and hopefully has some early pictures.

This red 71 R/T pre resto was in much better shape and it shows the trim as being all black. http://www.alangallantautomotiverestoration.com/1971FC7383.html It was owned by Moparts member Luddinton before this for some time.

Here's a white 71 R/T he's restored in the past too.

The layout for the black vs. silver as posted by Challenger1 is correct - again with the notation that the black on the center grille section is natural plastic, not painted.

Ken Mosier has provided me with some tips on how to polish up the black plastic which I'll try in the next few weeks.

Alan G's '71 V-code does have the A46 group put back on it; he's even put the door edge protectors back on the car as well.

Lastly, as for headlight bezels, the NOS '71 R/T bezels that I have for my car do not have the blackout extending up to the proper place. I will be repainting them properly and applying the tape per original.

Did he have any suggestions on how to remove the argent paint from a grille so as not to damage the black plastic underneath it so you can leave it natural black??

Years ago 69Mannix suggested to me soaking the grille in old brake fluid to remove the argent delicately. I've never tried it.

I tried that....absolutely no effect
Soda-blasting is a possibility on my list. I asked them how it would leave the finish of the plastic, they told me to bring the grill in and they would do a test on the back....
