Jim, here's a quick down and dirty way for your buddy to secure the spare while we're looking for a good reporduction '68 "J"-hook. Tell him go to TSC or any hardware store and pickup a 3/8" X 8" "eyelet bolt" and just open up the round eyelet to the approximate "J" shape of the original J-hook hold down rod. No one should be able to see the difference with the spare in place especially if you file or grind the threaded end for the nut guide. They are about $1.98 and should work to keep the spare secure for now.
