rrunner the lug wrench tire iron pic is very helpful.
Looks like I have the correct one! Like many of our cars my iron was mia due to wide mag wheels, fortunately a wrecker near here had a donor.

I agree with the hook measurements that rrunner posted. For what it is worth, my hook is 1/4"-3/8" longer in the threaded area. Probably just "allowable production tolerances" at the vendor...

Glad I could help with the info!

Jim

I'll throw this into the mix too, this is the rod from the '69 spare/jack mount:

Jim,
What dia. wheels does the car have with the hook you described?
I've heard there are two different lengths and also that some (unknown to me) chevy model had used a hook that was the same config. as the mopar hook, but longer.

My RR is a hemi car so 15" rims (F-70 tires). I would doubt that there would be different rods for 14" or 15" rims. As far as the same rods for different brands, I'm guessing that the same vendor in the Detroit area may have supplied more than one manufacturer. It makes good business sense to me, why supply only one when you can get the accounts for all three...

I showed a good friend a copy of the spare tire hold down rod and he asked if he could keep it for a few days..............and look what he did, THANKS CJ

Made from 3/8" rod. You can find bare or galvanized 3/8" rod at Tractor Supply Company (TSC) pretty cheap and then use a 3/8 - 16 thread

I have a buddy looking for that rod as well for his 68 GTX. I'm guessing it may be a one year only thing for B-bodies. The rod measures 9.5" long and 2.5" at the widest point of the hook, and if you find more than one let me know.

Jim

Jim, here's a quick down and dirty way for your buddy to secure the spare while we're looking for a good reporduction '68 "J"-hook. Tell him go to TSC or any hardware store and pickup a 3/8" X 8" "eyelet bolt" and just open up the round eyelet to the approximate "J" shape of the original J-hook hold down rod. No one should be able to see the difference with the spare in place especially if you file or grind the threaded end for the nut guide. They are about $1.98 and should work to keep the spare secure for now.
