I've just rebuilt my 383 in my 70RR and am looking at getting a new carb. The engine is running a Comp Cams hydraulic flat tappet XE274H...488/491 valve lift. It's an air grabber car so I went with the Edelbrock DP4b intake. It's bored .030 over,flat-top pistons and stock HP exhaust manifolds through an entire 2 1/2 mandrel bent system. It's a 4-spd with 3:54 gears and I was thinking along the lines of a Holley 750 double pumper or a Quick Fuel HR series 750...anyone with any experience along these lines?
I'm a novice at this so if I missed something take that in mind...I was figuring a 750 DP would be good.I'm planning on TTI headers down the road...any help would be great, thanks

Dave

The car in question is a 4 speed...I'd go with a 750 dp

It doesn't need any more than a 750.What kind??That is up to you.I really like the Holley HP series.I have a couple of the older ones and they have been great.I also have a plain old 3310 vacuum secondary with a milled choke horn and a metering block kit in the rear that has been flawless for 20 years and run on everything from a 350 to a 427BBC to my 496 stroker.
The bottom line is what ever you get you will have to tune it some to get the best drive ability out of it.I had screw in air bleeds put in mine and the tuned on a dyno so I know the fuel curve is spot on.
Your car will run fine with a DP or a vac secondary. The choice is up to you.I still favor vacuum secondary carbs that are street driven more than not. They feel crisper and if the secondary spring is correct you have no performance loss IMO.You can get away with a slightly larger carb this way also without it stumbling around at part throttle in a higher gear.

You said mild 383 & street driven. As said several good ways to go. A correctly functioning OE thermoquad, one with 1&1/2" primaries (850 CFM). Several of the Eddies except for the infamous #1407 750. If a holley then one of the clones with the adjustable circuits

Why not the 1407?

But existing is basically all I do.

Way too many reported issue with them. Enough that I would be leery of it tho I'm sure alot of em are fine. I do have one that the guy said ran OK but needs rebuilt so I got it for cheap. It's my first one & I'm fixing to find out first hand. It'd be the perfect size for my upcoming street 451.

Okay. Thanks.
Odd you mentioned it as that's what I have on my 383 and it seems to be running rich. I have gone down a metering rod but its still rich. Granted I am trying to learn about carbs and am very novice when trying to understand them. That's why I asked.

Actually the multiple reported problems are the internal metering circuits are screwed up somehow & there's severe driveability problems & not just runnning rich & nobodys' figured out what's going on with them. With you just running rich you may have one of the good ones. On yours when is it rich? idle/cruise/power. #1 the idle fuel psi must be below 5.5 psi with a known accurate gauge (alot of gauges are inaccurate). Then as you know float level then the rods/jets/springs depending if the issue is on the cruise or the power circuit. I like Eddies & my 1406 starts/runs flawless ex the choke vac break is messed up & I need a good reg to drop the psi.

Thanks! Seems to be mostly at cruise and start up.
Float is the next thing I'm looking at. I'm just starting to learn as about carbs as I always found them daunting and mystifying.

MY 750 - 800cfm "Q" series Quick fuel. Definitly has to be a double pumper with a stick car.

4 speed street legal. Best time 10.99 @ 124 mph on 93 octane pump gas @ 3926# total weight

Guys thanks for helping out this rookie with all your info. From what I gather it's a Holley or Quick Fuel DP carb and tune it as I go along. Both those carbs appear to have the most room for adjustments, etc. Thanks again for all the input...

Dave
