There is a small steel tube that runs from the topside of the passenger exhaust manifold, up along the back of the motor ( next to the firewall ) then to the top rear area of the intake manifold. It is used to direct hot air from the exhaust manifold to the rear carb choke housing to heat up the choke coil IN the choke assembly.

Troy - thanks! - this sounds like it might be it - I did not chase the line to the underside of the car, but it runs down the firewall right about in the middle of the car and so i thought it was heading to the tranny - but what you describe makes more sense so you are saying that it heats up the choke coil INSIDE the choke assembly - fair enough - but it is not quite clear to me where this line should hook up to the carb? i am assuming there must be a rubber hose that is now missing that clamps on to that steel line and then goes onto a fitting on the rear carb? - any chance someone has a picture or diagram of where that hooks in? also, what size/spec rubber hose should i be looking at? thanks!

No rubber hose it connects to the choke thermostat on the rear carb , if it's not long enough to go there you need a new line

Here's my 68 Hemi prior to installing it into my former '68 Charger R/T. I do believe the tubes that are made now are a little better in quality when it comes to the proper bends. It also has a white heat resistant cover over it. One of the ends goes into the TOP nipple on the passenger exhaust manifold, not the bottom like I previously mentioned. The other end goes into the orifice in the choke's black bakelite cover

There is also another tube that runs from the bottom of the passenger side exhaust manifold and runs up along the rear of teh enge by the heat tubes. This one has the tube end that looks like a fuel line tip. It terminates just under the air cleaner base to the rear. It does have a small rubber hose that connects it and the air cleaner together... Here's a picture of what Hoover offers for sale ( both rear tubes ) http://www.hooverautoparts.com/products/Hemi%20Parts/M%20150.php

Troy - thanks! - got it - the picture is very helpful - to your next post and to John's point, the steel line is nowhere close enough to get to the choke cover
i am thinking, therefore, that it must be what you say in your second post, Troy, that it should have a rubber line and then go into the air cleaner - also, the tip of that steel line does look like the tip of a fuel line (kind of like a bullet) - what kind of rubber line do i need?
i get why exhaust gas to the choke is a good thing to heat up the car quicker
what is the point of the line from the air cleaner to the exhaust?
thanks!

any thoughts on what size rubber hose i need?
and out of curiosity, why does the exhaust manifold need a hookup to the air cleaner?

The metal line for the choke doesn't attach to the air cleaner base, it attaches to the choke-stat on the carb. It's the black bakelite thing on the right side of the rear carb. See pic. The cover is on the line in question in the attached pic.
Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

The entire choke circuit is really simple. A metal line fits directly into the cover of the choke housing and goes down to the top of the right side exhaust manifold. This line is covered with an insulating cover. This metal line fits into a tube pressed into the exhaust manifold that is exposed to the exhaust. A second uncovered metal line has a threaded fitting that screws into a fitting on the bottom of the exhaust manifold. This is the other end of the pressed tube. This metal line then is connected with a short rubber hose to a nipple on the air cleaner base on the clean side of the air filter. How does it work? The choke housing on the rear carburetor is under vacuum and draws air through the entire system. It starts by the nipple on the air cleaner base supplying filtered cold air to the choke circuit. The cold air goes through the first uncovered metal line into the tube that is inside the exhaust manifold. The air is heated from the exhaust so it is now hot air. The hot air goes through the insulated line to the choke housing. The hot air then relaxes the bi-metal spring in the choke to allow the choke to open. That's pretty much it.
