Cab - I will give him a call and find out - I guess the easiest thing to do is to throw some fuel in there and see if that solves it - $10, no harm, no foul

if that doesn't do it, you have given me a whole bunch of other things to chase...hopefully it won't come to that, but thanks for the tips!

talked some more with the builder...he was not the least bit uncertain when telling me to add some gallons of high octane - said the engine needed it

so maybe other things are causing the detonation, but let's see if this doesn't clear it up

ended up getting the 2 drums - the bungs on the drums tighten up with a wrench type thing so they are pretty air tight - very convenient to walk to the corner and pull 5g of racing fuel - went with the plastic drum pump - while the drum is pretty full it is very easy to siphon the gas off - VP dealer dropped off the drums to the house at no charge (very nice of him!) - all in all, worked out well!!

and what about the idea of driving around with a 5g jug (or sealed pail) in the trunk? - would you guys have a concern about doing that?

had a chance to drive the car this weekend after adding the 5g of racing fuel - what a difference! - first of all no detonation...in of itself a great thing - second, the engine was just livelier...don't know how else to describe it - it was crisper, smoother, pulled super strong and in a smooth way all the way up the curve - just a pleasure

no one commented on the quote above - if I am on a drive and run low on gas and need to fill, i was thinking i would keep a 5g jug in the trunk to be able to blend and at least have one extra fill before needing to go back home - how dangerous is it to keep a jug in the trunk? - it would be a jug sold by VP (the company that sells the fuel) and so is purpose made with a thick o-ring seal in the cap - presumably the right kind of plastic - etc. - but i imagine it gets pretty hot in the trunk on a sunny summer day

thoughts?

thanks!

Yup real leaded race fuel in our cars is like the nectar of the gods for our old motors.

To answer your question above, No I would not feel comfortable having a 5 gal fuel jug in my trunk at all times.

I also sell those cheap plastic siphon pumps for 55 gal drums(16 bucks). But they are so cheaply made that they won't last more than a month or so especially with gasoline.

They are sold as a one time use around here because they don't last. I have wore out at least 30 of them since 1985.

They are a great alternative for right now, not long term if you know what I mean.

Been adding 110 for years...A non-additive fuel with octane is a beautiful thing...AUDIBLE detonation is not...

We still have availability at quite a few stations in these parts...

Transporting fuel in a non-vented, enclosed area is dangerous...

Temp and fumes are not your friend...

C1/RS - thanks for the replies!

C1 - that is exactly the pump they sold me - $10 - so as you say, probably a throw away item - hope it lasts at least a drum or two

OK - got it on the storing gas in the trunk

thanks
