what is the 5 speed used behind a 88 pre-mag v-6 in a d-100 truck?
what else can you find this 5 speed in that will swap to the d-100 truck.

The NV 2500 and the NV 3500 are light duty trannys and are not really suited to being behind a torquey engine. If your thinking what Im thinking you are you want the NV4500. Those came behind the 360s.. IIRC you will definately have floor pan clearance problems if you dont have the stick floorpan.
I am truckless..

I wouldnt expect a 4500 to last behind the torqe of a Cummins either, a V8 gas motor yes..

I've never driven an NV4500, but aren't they "truck gearboxes" big, clunky, difficult to shift quickly?
the NV3500 I had in my Dakota worked great. behind a stock 360 I would never worry about it. they're rated for 350 ft lbs if you get the close ratio version (a 3.48 first gear ratio vs the 4.01 first gear ratio in the "wide" spread version) the stock magnum 360s make 345 ft lbs, and unless you put on sticky slicks and try to launch it off the line at 5,000 rpm, you will not break it.
My 360 is making 285 RWHP and 325 RWTQ, so I figure that it's about 375-400 ft lbs at the crank, and 350-360 hp at the crank. I'm fairly confident that even with that power level, as long as I didn't use sticky tires or abuse the gearbox with power shifts that it would last a long time behind that combo.
but, that said, I upgraded to a T56 anyway, because I know that someday, I'm going to want to put some good heads and maybe a stroker crank into my 360, and that my power levels will increase dramatically.

My 4.7 auto, 2wd quad cab Dakota weighs 4500 empty. A 4wd will be a couple hundred pounds heavier. But I've never seen a quad cab with a stick... Although I've heard some do exist

Scratch, a supra 5 speed transmission. Will bolt to the sale bellhousing as a ax15, look into it. If you search www.turbododge.com for a rear wheel drive shadow with a 2.4 turbo and that tranny, the guys have lots of info on it.

well I know the differance between the v-6 DAK bell and the D100 bell now. a535 can be found in 87-91 4cyl/v-6 DAK/v-6 d-100 trucks. d-100 has slave on passide and both bolt patterns for a535 5 speed and the granny tranny 4-speed which has slave on pass side in 2x and 4x4 Dak bell has a535 bolt pattern only, slave on driver side. a535 5 speed takes a 904 slip yoke. a535 5 speed take a long style speedo pinion and housing, clamp, bolt a535 5 speed has 1 style trans mount/xmember for DAK and "seems" to use the same spool mount/xmember as the auto 727/904 d-100/d-150 trucks. looks to me the hydro/clutch system and v-6/v-8 bellhousing/a535 5 speed was a direct bolt-in replacment for the 833OD 4-speed in the D100/D-150 trucks starting in 88-91 trucks. after looking at it for a while today with it in hand, I think it will fit in the 88 truck small auto trans tunnel. (Basketcase siad his 88 v-6 5 speed was the same as the 87 small hump floorpan) now for the hens teeth gold nugget part... you can get a remaned a535 or a used a 535 from a JY and none come with stub shift lever/housing.. trans runs 750-1200 $$$ if you find one.. then there is the shifter thats will be MIA. so any core a535 or the shifter housing stub lever is GOLD!! and as rare as hens teeth it seems. I need this one piece to finish the conversion..can anyone find one in their area for me would be great..its gold so I expect to pay GOLD prices for it. and if it dont work out i can always use a granny tranny with the v-6/v-8 bell housing. BASKETCASE..did you keep the shifter housing from the a535????? you should be kicking yourself about now for scrapping the a535 and shifter housing.. it is gold even making noise or broken...and you just tossed it out.. can you go get it back?? hurry up plez. some pics for everone to

shifter is MAI on all i find so far. I check a ax-15 jeep 5 speed...close but no fit on the a535 I assume the 4cly will have a bell of its own and maybe the 4 speed trans listed may have the right shift lever. looks like a boll on a shft then flats ground on both side to fit thru the 2 outer shift rail pawls you can see it has to be thin to slide between the 2 square looking outer rail pawls to move the thin one in the middle

thanks for checking on it. here is a 91 d-150 auto trans xmember with 2 piece trans mount that should be correct for the d-100 v-6 a535 manual trans. found all the bolts/nuts the hoop/plate/mount on the ground. engine/auto trans MIA..xmember had every frame bolt still in place and torqued to specs..but i got them with my leatherman tool and a cresent wrench with low funds I had to pass up a steering box brace with the box removed along with the rad out, only 2 bolts holding it on there. saw a complet /6 with a 833OD 4 speed with shifter/rods and all laying up in the back of a truck bed for ez pickins 4 bolts would have gotten it off. look whats hiding under there.. could it be??? pics

good news!!! looky what i found 30 miles from my house.. 400$ the 93 d-150 5 speed with a v-6/v-8 bell housing. this looks real close to the a535 and looks to have replaced it in 92-93 in the d-100/d-150 2x trucks. looks like the top plate shifter tower change some, looks close on the main case, has the same xmember i just got from the u-pull for the a535 trans basket case, does this look like what you had or was it indeed a535? looks like this might fix my shifter problem,I will some sheet metal to make a shifter box/tunnel modifacation as need. so,looks like take the a535 back for a refund and save 400 bux and pick this one up for the 400 and a short drive.

Does that trans have the big register like an 833od? Sure would be cool behind a /6..... Glad ya found a complete unit!

yes i believe it does have the larger register.
now, with my luck...I hope the JY does not give any trouble on a refund...I will give them the option to swap it for the 93 5 speed from a d-150 if they have it.
but then again I would not mind holding onto the a535 as it seems rare and like a pink elephant these days.
but 800$ is a lot of refund.

Good luck. If ya deal with them a lot and are on good terms, I'd say ya have a fair chance. I will soon be on the hunt for a 5 speed to go behind the /6. Really want a close ratio car unit out of a t bird turbo coupe. That is where the turbo came from.....

mine musta been the 535, my shifter mount didn't look like that
i thought that also, but you never know when someone might have swaped it out as the 535 seems to be the pink elephant with a gold nugget shifter.
I was looking real hard at the dak ax-15 which seems to be plentiful and cheaper in the u-pull but to new to hook up the speedo cable in the 88 truck. but still would make a nice swap if you dont mind the speedo and xmember fabbing.

scrthn--that tranny is a 3550--means it is a 3500 with a removable bellhousing----chevy has run the 3500 (cast on bell) behind 350 powered trucks for years without any giant problems---but problems will arrise if you think it is for drag racing or other abuse ----i have picked off 2 of them recently at pickaparts for less than $120/each out of 97-98 dakotas....bob
thanks for that info on it, I was not sure what it is called.
no drag racing with it just cruzing.

looking at the pictures and your description, that sounds like a NVG4500 shifter *might* work. can you give me the dimensions of the bolt pattern, and height from the mounting face to the rail socket?
the mout bolt patteren is 4" across side to side and 3.5 front to back
from the top of the lug to top of shifter flange is 1 3/8" and about 2" to the bottom of the cup area.
I looked at a nv4500 and it has the flats like needed but if it fits is another story. to price to buy just to find out it dont.

i should have looked at your pictures before my fingers took off---your tranny is a top loader and the 3500/3550 are not and i would check amazon/or summit for the shifter---- for my nv4500 i checked amazon and summit had one listed there---kinda funny....bob
seems the A535 is a pink elephant with a gold nugget shifter.
if i cant find a shifter for the 535 i am going with the bigger 5 speed i posted straped to the pallet.
those are 1/2 the price and replaced it in 92-up D-100/150/250/350 trucks that use the same removable bell for the v-6 & v-8 (from what I can tell anyways)

Well, to jump backwards, the truck I drove is a 5-speed 1997 Chevy dually with Vortec 350 and the tranny is synchronized in all five gears. Also, First gear isn't as low as some I have driven, but it still workx better starting off in Second.

halfton would be an NVG3500, IIRC with a 4:1 first
3/4 ton would be an NVG4500, IIRC with a ~5.87:1 first

Mopar manual transmission fluid. See this link: http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/nv4500_spec.htmIf you stumbled onto a NV4500 wow! R. Checking out the other number, look at this link: http://www.tellico4x4.com/nv4500-tech-label.phpA 2wd NV4500. If Patrick is right, and the dually I drove was anNV4500,, you will just LOVE it in your truck. It's light-years ahead of my NP420. I was thrown by the first-gear synchro, didn't remember that NV4500s are synchro into all forward gears. IIRC, the earlier Dodge NV4500s were also synchronized into reverse. The only problem with this tranny is the 5th gear problem, look it up. There is a fix, though. R.

it seems it decoded as a NVG 4500 92-93 D body v-8 hydro bell/clutchfork/trans/shifter/yoke for 400$ 90day warranty. good deal?? sure better than the 800$ pink elephant with a gold nugget shifter a535 5 speed going back for a rust free 91 d-100 cab to replace the daily driver 85 rust bucket.

I was reading about the fluid needed but 20$ a quart? 1004 to refill! well gone to far now to skimp on the fluid it needs. from what I can tell this is the early one with the syncronized 1st & revs gears. light duty with a 19 spline input shaft/727 out put shaft/yoke. may have a 1st gear thats not as low as the standerd duty/heavy duty 4500..from what I have read anyways. I suppose I can count the turns of the input to turns of the output to see what the 1st gear ratio is?...correct? wish I knew what gear was behind it for a correct speedo tooth count. it had 37 tooth short pinion/speed sensor housing that i swaped to the 36 tooth gear/727 housing that I would use with 727-3.91-325/50/15 but need to figure in the OD 5 th gear??? anyone do the math??

The speedo drive gear on the output shaft is after any OD gearing so the pinion calculations will be the same as a 1-1 top gear trans.
Look in the hole where the adapter fits and mark one drive gear tooth with a grease pencil, then turn the output shaft and count the number of drive gear teeth.

check fifthgearrepair.com for the simplest/cheapest way to fix the fifth gear---it is a simple process that an average mechanic can do in less than one hour---the only failures i have heard about are cummins powered units where the tranny is lugged under load in fifth gear--chev 454 and dodge V10 ones dont have the 5th gear issue so i wouldnt suspect your motor will take it down...bob
I agree, i have read the same thing on the 4500HD lugging/diesel/v-10/4x4 5th gear loss.
I read the 5thgearrepair link and it seems to be for the 4500HD 4x4 10/31 input/output spline only.
I am hoping the 4500LD = light duty with a 19 spline input and a 29 or 30 spline output.(I need to count output,I counted the input )
it decodes to a 3.9/5.2/5.9 gas engine so it may be good to go with no problems, it is low milage under 100,000.

My truck has an nv4500, mine shifts very smooth. It's not a short throw like a car, but other than some newer 6 speed trucks I drove... it's the smooth shifting trans I ever shifted.
On the fluid, I'd stick with the factory stuff. Amsoil I believe makes a substitute, but to save 4-5 bucks a quart, think I'd pass. Some places offer the factory style stuff in gallons for much cheaper... but never seem to have any on stock.

got pics of the shifter end for a a535 trans. whoo hooo! member shortbed88 has a complete D-100 hydro clutch a535 set up, he was nice enuff to pull the shifter and get me pics. this is a gold nugget shifter if anyone finds one. the flats on the side of the ball with no plastic cup sets it apart, it has a thin middle rail 3-4 gear 1-2 ans r-5 gears are the bigger lugs on either side of 3-4 rail. pics are worth a 1000 words when it come to this sort of thing. not many have heard of the a535 much less seen or worked on one.

I scored a 4500 back as well. Was put behind a V6 in an '88 I had. Are there any other non-hydro bells it will bolt up to? I got the hydro bell and slave set but my '78 Club Shortbox I got back will need the mech. linkage.
