What's up, all. I have a friend that has an '04 Durango, and they had ignition keys cut to fit the ignition, but were not programmed. My question is, can they be user programmed or do they have to be taken to a dealer? TIA for any help.

Vehicles equipped with sentry key theft deterrent system have a chip in the key which requires programming. A dealer will have to retrieve a pin number from Chrysler in order to do so and will most likely charge you around $50 to program your key. Otherwise the car just starts and dies so as so deter anyone from just cutting a key and stealing your car.

If you have a programmed key you usually can start the car with the programmed key. Then shut the car off and quickly start it with the new unprogrammed key. Let the car run and the computer will program the new key.

Not on a Mopar! Unless you have 2 working keys this will not work. If you only have 1 working transponder key you must take it to a locksmith or a dealer to get programed.

Is the key a remote headed key with the buttons built into the key? If not & it doesn't start he has the wrong key, see below. If it is a remote head key then it must be taken to a locksmith or a dealer to program, unless you have 2 working now, then you can self program.

The 2004 Durango was the only year that only the factory remote headed key will work, no other non remote key will work, other years & models you can use a non remote head transponder key. The exception here is that transponder was an option, so you could have a Durango that will start with just a metal key, confused yet?

Note that once a transponder key has been programed to a vehicle it is married to that vehicle! You can not reprogram it to another vehicle.
There is a tool that will "unlock" these keys & clear them out so that they can be reprogramed & used again but some times they will stop working after a while. So don't buy these off of eBay.
