Is counting the splines (19, 23 or 24 spline) the only way to ID a 727? Is there another way to tell what year the trans is and if its a lock up or non?

Oh yeah, small block is what I'm dealing with. If memory serves I was told it came out of a van...mi think a 78. So it SHOULD be a non lock up. I'll be rebuilding it in about 2 weeks to put behind a stout 360 in my challenger.

Any input on which rebuild kit and converter is appreciated too. Gonna be 99% street driven with 4:10s in the rear.

Laine.

Drivers side under the shift linkage at the pan rail there is a machined flat with numbers stamped on it .

lock up will have a smooth tip about 1.5" on the input shaft for the lock up coverter clutch.

a non lock up will have splines all the way to end of input shaft.

check pan rail # to see what yr it is,anything could have been put together over the yrs.
