It sounds like you bought 74 rear brackets. The 73 brackets are the same basic design as 70-72...just longer to mount the bumper out farther. 74 used a piece of flat stock for a bracket and there was a large metal box beam thing behind the bumper for it to attach to.

The brackets I bought definately space the bumper out less than the ones I took off.

The 73 brackets were boxy, similar in construction to these.

Regarding your questions, the 70-72 bumper mounting bolts are located in the same location.

You do not need to use the filler stip. However, you will have to plug or fill in the retaining holes as a result of removing the filler from your '73. Don't forget you will need to procure a set of the '70-'72 bumperettes or fill in the rear valance gap.

On the front, the '71 bracket is not compatible with your '73 bumper, same as the back.... You have two options. Use the '71 bracket and find a 70-72 front bumper. Or two, redrill your existing bracket per the prior poster's instructions. Use can use your front bumper and merely remove the large bumperettes. Just place a bumper bolt in the holes where the bumperttes were secured. The '70-72 do not have this extra hole.

The only other things that you may want to consider is on the front corners of the 70-72 bumpers are rubber wedges which swedged into the corners on each side of the front bumper. Your '73 does not have them. Perhaps you can add them if if it matters?

The second picture looks like 74 brackets. They use a large metal piece behind the bumper. If you don't have that extra piece in there...the bumpers wouldn't be out as far.

Anyone else? Am I right or wrong. I thought the 70-72 brackets looked like the first pic. I know 74 brackets are different because member "Challenger1" was going to send me new bumper brackets for my 73. Luckily he sent me pics of his 74 brackets before he sent them.

74 bumper, I have a rear bumper that I took off a 73 challenger back in 87 or so. It's in my basement and it looks the same as this 74 bumper. It's been 22 years ago so I can't remember if it was a early or late 73. I have more down at a storage bin but they are buried below a ton of stuff, so I couldn't get to them without emptying a 10x15 area stacked to the ceiling. I really need to gather and inventory my stuff all in the same location, yea right that will never happen.

I'll take some pics of what I got. It looks like the 74 brackets pictured have the bumper mounting tabs roughly parallel to part that bolts to the body.

I think the ones I have definatley have an angle to them, but I could be wrong.

The lower one in the pic is the 70-71 style...I have a bumper in my shop right now ready to mount on the '71 and those ARE the brackets.

This is a 72 bumper,in the middle. The lower brackets in your picture looks like these I think. So what year are the uppers for in your picture? 73 rear bumper on the left in my picture.

I thought the 70-72 were the same...but I also thought they were a stamped steel part like the 73's so I don't think I will be much help. Sorry for passing on wrong information.

I was told on another site that the 74 bumper guards were bigger than the 73's...also that the rubber piece that extends down to the valence is all one piece in 74 unlike the 2 piece design of 73. Can anyone confirm this?

Looky what I found, it adds to my confusion. I'm 98% sure these are the rubber bumpers I took off my 74 about 15 years ago. They appear to be the short ones?


I'm 90% sure this is the bumper I removed from a 73 car that I had in the 80s. Strangly it has one longer rubber bumper on it and one smaller rubber bumper. So I'd say there were long and short bumpers, I would think the longer ones go on a later car(74) but like I said the ones that came off my 74 car appear to be the shorter ones.

Are the pieces that go down to the valence incorperated into the rubber bumpers on the longer ones?

How good is the rubber on the shorter ones. Mine are cracked right throught the middle of the bolt holes.

I was wrong again as usual. I guess the bumper in my previous pictures was a 74 with the rear bracing like it is. You were right in the 73 being different than the 74. This is the 73 bumper I cut off a rusty 73 back in the 80s. It has the 73 only brackets on it with the short rubber bumpers. I remembered it as soon as I saw how rusty it was. Unfortantly the brackets are really rusty where they can't be reused. Burdar, PM me your shipping address and I'll send you the short rubber bumpers in my earlier picture as they are in pretty good shape. N/C You just send me whatever the shipping is, if you want them.





There's rust holes in the brackets, I bought this car for 100 bucks and put one of my 340s in it and drove it for a couple years till it got so rusty it wasn't safe anymore. I cut it up in my back yard and put a little out for trash each week. I got rid of the whole car like that, in the weekly trash!
