I have a R block 408 with w5s. I run 2 toilets on alky on a tunnel ram, mine likes to be shifted at 6800 and cross at 7300. I have tried a bunch of shift points. Mine likes that best. 4.30 gear, 3100lbs, 727. Best of 6.06@113 and 9.55@139.99. Mine picked up around .06 going from 4.56s to 4.30s fwiw

I agree on the fact no two ever seem to run the same. But I guess it looks like if the balance is good and you have good components then the motor can live up high. Now I just need to get to a track and see if it warrants it.Thanks again for your experience guys

Well I can't wait to try it out.One more question, not to change the thread, but I have Isky Tool Room springs, roughly 3 years old but with 6 passes on them.I rotate the motor often and it gets driven occasionally to Saturday donut meets.Like I said I know it's vague, just curious what the life expectancy on them are.Season or two

Hey guys, havent posted in a few years but trying to get back to the track and thought id pick your brains for some knowledge.Im running a W-5 stroker 416 based on a '68 340 block,3/4 fill, bottom end girdle,14.1 compression and a 712 lift Bullet roller with a Pro Systems 1070 on top of a Indy 360-1.My question is can anybody with a comparable combo tell me what they shift at,or a safe rpm this engine can turn?I've only had it to the track twice with this combo and have been shifting at 7600.It pulls hard all the way and revs to that quickly.I've been reading a lot of post from people saying they only turn theirs 6000 give or take, and if I don't need to turn it that high then its a waste.Any thoughts, and thank you in advance.Sorry so long winded.
what rocker arms are you running????

Just Harland Sharp 1.5 ratio.I bought the heads about 6 years ago not realizing they were untouched, had a NASCAR truck intake and a cam that didn't work with the combo.I bought it as a package from somebody. After running it a few times with the heads untouched and it running horrible I sent them to Shady Dell, and Ryan set me up with cam, intake and fully rebuilt the heads from scratch because they had junk parts the way I bought them.I milled the oil drain back passages ect.The Harland Sharps were what I had.Im sure I need to change those. But I will say that after I got the parts back it ran 200% better.Almost two seconds better.

I know it's not relevant, but my Duster runs TTi 1-7/8 headers, full 3 inch TTi exhaust to the bumper, and 275/60/15 drag radials.I've heard I'm giving up hp with the TTi headers.

I doubt you are giving up any power with the 1 7/8 tubes but the collector could be better with 3 1/2" but if you run with the exhaust on then the exhaust system could be holding it back.. depending on the muffs and the location of the muffs I ran my engine through my header program and it called out a 1 7/8 tube and 3 1/2 collector.. our engines are fairly close

Hmmm, yeah it has 3 inch collectors now and has HUGE DynoMax mufflers and an x-pipe to the back with turndowns at the bumper like stock. The big muffs were the result of neighbors that didn't share my love of Sunday cruises. But I have wondered if dropping the exhaust would make it run harder. And it has to weigh 200lbs to boot.

The Dynomax isnt a bad muff but if its in the stock location it can hold you back due to the temps of the exhaust and the volume/area it still has at that point.. the farther back you put your muffs the better it is in two ways... its easier to control the noise/sound and the gasses cooled more so the gasses have reduced in volume/area so it has less back pressure

And they are in the stock location.....between that and no hood maybe theres some still to be had.Next run I'll pull the mufflers and try to get a baseline from scratch. The headers sure fit nice, but going to a 3.5 collector would be a worth while mod?

Only if you pull the exhaust... if you do put 3.5" on it make them 16"-18" long for the best tuning... I have 3.5 on mine but I neck them down at the end of the collector to 3" because I dont plan on running my ride with out the exhaust(street rod)

That's a beautiful car.Havent seen it at the track, been a while for me,but wasn't your car in Car Craft or...?Looks like it runs really good.I never have raced with the hood on,adjusted the CalTracs or anything really.Always been a mad rush it seems and never very many runs.I think we are going to start making the Irwindale trip starting this month.Maybe I can get it dialed better and run a 9 someday

I ran those same headers on my w5 motor and swapped to 3.5 collectors and didnt notice any difference. Brian i think tested those headers a while back against a race headers and i think noted about a 30 horsepoer difference. the TTI's make sacrifices in the power dept for fit.....

Good memory on Car craft that was a few years ago. Check your PMs. You have to optimize your combo and you will get your timeslip

Yes they do sacrifice power for fit... those tubes are too long and the collectors are too short

...but they fit ohhhhh so nice! Ran the same header in our W5 70 Duster. 9.87 @ 137 was our best time through the mufflers. Don't have the cam specs in front of me... but it seems .680 lift but we did run a 1.6 rocker. ....and if anybody needs a set of TTI W5 headers shoot me a pm!
