Does anyone know if the time delay relay is suppose to get hot? I am putting a factory system in my 71 Challenger and it gets very hot while the door is open. Does not seem right.

Normal.... The timer is a bimetallic strip, two metals which expand at a different rate are bonded together, the dissimilar rate causes the the strip to curve as the metals expand... A contact point is attached to the strip so when the strip bends the points open, the circuit loses continuity... If you leave a door ajar the switch is bypassed but current still flows so the unit gets hot...

I'm still not sure how they work. Seems like when the door is opened the relay will activate and keep the lights on for awhile. Then it cools off and the lights go out Is this right

No, the heating up is what turns the lights off, but leaving the door open means it heats up longer than normal & when you close the door the lights go out immediately..

On most cars it actually lights up the headlight switch & the ignition switch..
Stand corrected, looks like an additional “switch title lamp” for the e-bodies, b-bodies these years, single lamp.

So the process of opening the door is what activates the relay then when the door is closed it turns off and it cools down and the lights go out in about 30 sec.
