Uh huh. You got one.

I just went through this. There are only two real solutions:

Drop it off with your buddy the machinist and have him bush the shaft guide.
OR
Get a new base-plate.

There's no other way around it pardner, sorry.
Everything else you might try, leaks. Trust me.

Bush the shaft guide? You mean bore out the holes in tha base plate and install bushings? What type of bushings? Bronze?

Yeah.

I mean, I don't know. I'm not a machinist. I guess brass would work.

Yeah, BRASS YOUR GAS or BRONZE THAT [censored]!!!

The performance carbs have a nylon like bushing installed in the base plate and the throttle shaft rides on that. When it gets worn the shaft leaks gas. Holley sells replacement kits based on the list number of th carb. I would try that before puttin brass in it. Any good machine shop should be able to make this mod if its not already set up this way.

Have you checked to make sure gas isn't dripping out of the main boosters while it's idling or after you shut it off. If there is no bushing is going to fix your leak.

The carbs that I have seen leak at the throttle shafts will leak gas to the outside with the engine off and the throttle opened.

With the motor running they don't leak gas, because the sucking vacuum leak created by the shaft leak doesn't let it get to the outside of the carb.

Racincuda is on it! Yes those throttle shaft bushings come in the trick-kits and a few others..Supposedly they are a teflon bushing....Basically you take off the throttle plates, pull the shaft out and see what's left of those bushings first , the shaft will have a recess for them to ride in{one on each side}..The new bushings come narrow and thick, wrap them around the shaft and slide it back in...It will be hard to get them in the bores, but after you do just work the shaft back and forth and put side pressure on the shaft to side load the pressure...Those bushings will flatten out and work themselves the whole way around the throttle shaft{I do one at a time}...Just work it until the shaft moves freely...This will work well if it is reasonably within tolerences....If the shaft or bore is too far gone , it's new bushing or bottom end.....

I don't think most holleys heve teflon bushings on the front shaft. I could be wrong. We've made bushings before out of thin splitwall bronze valve guides. Just drill each side in about 1/2 inch and cut a piece of valve guide and put it in using green locktite and let it set over night and then hone it to size with a small carbon tipped hone in a drill. Works great.
