Well said! The question was posed because I went big block and needed to purchase a radiator. The recommendations poured in and left me . I felt a 22" should handle it fine but I didn't want to purchase one then find it was not quite enough. So I'm leaning toward a Champion 26" 3 row without cutting my rad support area as apposed to a 22".

I don't know too many people who have taxed a cooling system as severely as I have. My 65 has a 26" factory style radiator in a 22" opening. For several years there were a pair of turbochargers hanging inches away from the radiator. When spooled up the headers, turbine housings, and downpipes would glow red with the heat. Pack all of that on a 440 in a really tight engine compartment and you've got cooling nightmares. Doubly so in the Texas summer when I was running WOT in 100+ degree temps.
Once I dropped in the Mercedes cooling fan all my troubles went away. Blowing the occasional head gasket certainly didn't help things but the car still didn't overheat until I'd pushed too much of the coolant overboard.
A proper 26" radiator will handle a lot of heat.
