Have:
440 Block .060 fresh but set for stock cast slugs
TRW L2355 Pistons, new rings on rebuilt rods w/ ARP Bolts
413 Forged Crank Fresh .010/.010
906 Heads, old school port cleanup but fresh (Will need springs)- Need to cc heads.
TM-7 Intake w/ 1000cfm carb
3500 stall
4.30 gear ladder bar car w/ new slicks

Calcs: 9.8 to 1 based on .015 in hole w/ felpro .039 gasket & 84cc

These pistons have the 4 valve reliefs. About to send the shortblock out to get honed & balanced. My concern is whether I'll be able to get a decent cam in there. I can't check with mic until I at least get the block honed. Pistons don't fit yet. Don't want to put $6-800 into this short block & not be able to fit a decent cam (.557, etc).

Thanks.

I did something similar a few decades ago and had to have them flycut for a .590 cam.

I have thos eold TRW pistons in my motor too. IF I had it to do over again, I would buy a set of newer pistons using new metal technology, so I could have ran them tighter for better rign seal and less piston skirt slap. I hate how noisy and heavy these are. And YES, I had to notch them just to run a 257 @ 50 cam. I also had to cut my block to get them to zero deck. I am nOT happy with them, nope not at all.
Mine still had all of the paperwork with them and were in the original box. So I had the machinist set them to what the paperwork desired. And I double checked all measurements when I got the block back home. These were OK 40 years ago, but too many affordable options today to waste money on this old piston.
A buddy bought a set of KB Hyperutectic pistons and has less in them than I did in the machine work to make these work. Just saying.
Good luck with it either way you decide to go.

I used those same pistons in motor that I built nearly 30 years ago! It was not balanced or blueprinted, just bored, new pistons, rings and bearings, with stock valve 906 heads with stock ports. At the time I could not afford the professional touch. I worked up to the DC 296/557 cam and it ran strong. In a 3650# B-body with 727 (340 converter) and Dana 60 with 4:88 it ran consistent 12.0s and dipped into the 11.50s with a 125 Nitrous shot. I could not tell you how close the valves were to the pistons, never had reason to take it apart. Would I do it again...NO! I would use lighter pistons and spend the money for professional assembly.

Give them .006 piston to wall clearance (or a tad more they swell like crazy). I had mine zero deck and never had to deepen the fly cuts till I got .085 off my heads with a Ultradyne 263/271 @ .050 .597/.620 lift with 906 heads! Then we milled the heads another .020 for a total of .105
A .557 should be way fine!

Later Indy SR heads with .060 off was way cool also!!

I ran these in my old motor, with an R280 roller cam .280 dur, 670 lift, 76cc edelbrock heads, no clearance problems, despite the small reliefs.

Nice. Glad to hear they worked out for a few. They've been on the shelf for years. May just give 'em a shot.

I put these trw pistons L2355 in a lot of engines with no trouble, should be good up to a 590 lift. the old DC and mopar performance books tell that they or good for a 590 cam, I have a short block on the stand that I,am putting a crane 630 roller in this week and I will get back here on how that worked with that cam , the R280 cam is a big roller also and they said that it work ok . I will see.

mosweethemi - Looking forward to hearing how you made out. How far in the hole are you setting the pistons? I'm shooting for .015 down.

I started at .045 with torque plates and feel that was too tight but machinist did not want to go to .007 and after years of re hones was up to .0075 and it ran faster and cooler! Loose is better with those big pistons!

I should have demanded looser right off!

R U saying ... that they said that the OEM fly-cuts in the pistons are good for a 590 ?
