I figured that this may be the place to ask. Its not like I'm getting call from people that need to move Bulldozers, but I will want to tow cars and trailers in the future. The truck has a 440 and a 4 speed and 4.10 gears.
When I sold new cars and trucks in the 80s, we told customers that manual transmissions had lower tow ratings since they had no way of cooling themselves down like an automatic.
Thanks, Greg

I know people who have towed gooseneck horse trailers & hay trailers all over the place with them.

Trailer brakes are the MAIN key
That 440 & Granny Gear with a 4.10 will pull pretty good
Headers & big single exhaust 3-4" will help more most likely

I've pulled several trucks on my trailer with a D200 318/4spd 4.10 gears. A 440 will Pull way better than mine

Pulling isn't going to be the problem, and you aren't going to hurt the 4 speed as long as its full of oil....stopping will be more of an issue, truck and trailer brakes need to be good. Dad used to haul around a 10 ton tile machine, MF backhoe, and other tractors on a very heavy gooseneck with a 400 4speed, back in the day.

I was going to say that 4 speed is a pretty tuff trans.....I can't comment on pulling a bulldozer though.

I could be wrong, but I don't think I've seen a failure in one.......compared to a 727. Which I realize that doesn't mean anything really.

I wonder why they would have had you say that?

I've been told by horse people that the only reason that they don't like standard trans is if not shifted right then the horses get jerked around.

It is definitely torquey. I have no doubt that it can pull almost anything, I just wanted to be sure. Thanks everyone.

I towed a 62 Chrysler 300F on my open car trailer with a 440 powered 727 trans, 4:10 heavy duty 3/4 ton extended cab Dodge. 16,800 lbs across the DOT scales, through the mountains in PA. Even with the massive disc brakes in front, 12" x 3" drums out back and with trailer brakes, it didn't like the 6%, 6 mile long down hill stretch! The 440 wasn't too happy climbing the front side either. That trip was the beginning of the end for the old truck. The motor started using oil, the trans would slip going into 3rd, and the brakes must have gotten glazed over because the brakes didn't seem as good as before that trip. Worst part was it made me go get a real job, at least for a couple years.

I never heard the granny 4 speeds had a lighter towing capacity, I always expected a higher towing ability from the 4 speed, less trans slip. Gene

There's a lot of slippage with that automatic as well as heat.

That Granny will most likely out live anything that's attached on either end.
