I just removed my fuel sending unit from my tank to replace the pickup sock. While I had it out I noticed the brass float is about 1/3 full of fluid. I always thought the float should be dry inside. The wierd thing is I cannot see any bad spot on the float where the fuel would have entered and the gas guage seemed to work fine. It is a 3/8 sending unit from a 71 B body. Is there anyone who sells just replacement floats ? Is it the same brass float that is used on the 5/15 sending unit ?

I've fixed dozens of brass floats. Hold the float in your hand, blow compressed air over it, you will locate the hole, keep blowing until no more gas escapes, keep track of the hole and then solder it...use a minimum of solder so the weight isn't changed too much...then you can tell your story to your grandkids.

Ford dealer will have a new one to replace the Mopar piece. Use the google search at the top of this page for past discussions of this question.
