The motors(440) been together for four yrs. now .i started it up and went for a ride when i got home i shut it down and when i re-started it ,it started and stalled . to make a short story endless i ended up moving the dist. about 90* to get it to start back up,it ran like *#%# . I checked TDC with the piston and balancer it looked good .also checked the dist. drive gear the keyway looked good so did the angle of the slot . any thoughts would be appriciated .

It could have but you checked TDC and the dist was
in the right spot(before you moved it)... I did have
a old engine in my truck jump time and it ended up
right back to where it should be(weird) but every
valve was bent... I checked the compression and it
was like 40psi.... do a compression check

In that case you most likely jumped... turn the crank
back and forth and see when the rotor starts to turn

Make sure the distributor didn't move or the plate or other internal parts arn't screwed up before you start tearing the engine front apart. What ignition box are you running?

What type of dist./oil pump drive gear are you using? I've seen the gear slip on the shaft of the non-heavy duty gear drives. The heavy duty ones have the pin thru the gear and shaft. Just food for thought.

My 440 did something similar. It was new and running fine.went to start it a day later.Popping and wouldnt run.Pulled the cap and dist rotor was off.I said some nice words thinking I would be tearing apart a new engine.Pulled the dist and it had come apart inside. That was a Mallory unit.Installed a new MSD full setup and never looked back.Rocky

I pulled the timing chain cover off last night , the chain is sloppy but the dots line up and the hex-adjust is still tight ??????. It almost seems as if the dist. gear moved .I checked it again the pins not broken.
