HI all. I just went over to help a friend on a t.a. challenger. The converter hub is too big for the crank. So my question is, does a 4 speed crank not allow for an automatic? I've never had this problem. Also what would be the best solution?

Here's the pilot bushing and oilite bushing together. The oilite bushing is the one in the center of the pilot bushing. These have to come out of a 4spd crank to get an auto trans to mate properly.

Is the oilite bushing from the 4spd still in the crank?
The crank is the same for the 4 spd and auto on the T/A block.
On a 4 spd car, there's a pilot bushing, and inside the pilot bushing is a small copper/brass bushing. The pilot bushing along with the oilite bushing have to come out of the 4spd crank for an auto input shaft to fit.
NO bushing is still in the crank. It just has a pilot hole. The crank is not original I don't believe. It is a t.a. block but the crank isn't the same as all the 340 cranks I have(hole for converter hub is much smaller). So my only guess is that it is a 273/318 crank out of an earlier block?

Measure the bore of the converter hub register in the end of the crank, it should measure 1.810"....if it measures 1.550" it is a 273 crank. If it does measure 1.810" them measure the hub on the converter, it might be oversized.
In some rare cases a standard trans crank won't have the register bored at all.

The crank hole is definitely without doubt smaller. My other 340 cranks are very noticeably bigger and machined better. We've tried a few different converters. I can not get a pic since the car is at my friends house 10 miles from here. I am sure this is a older style crankshaft with smaller hole. Now it's just a matter of what the best solution is. Machine the crank, or find a converter? Although the early 727 is different Thank you guys for input.

I had the same problem when building a street motor for my AAR. Solution was pulling the motor apart and machining the crank to fit the hub on the converter. Some mentioned using a grinder to do it in the car but I did not think that was the best idea.

This is what I was afraid of. It will be a lot of work, but worse things happen. Thanks guys.

If I remember correctly the difference was around .250 or so. It was a major setback, not one I will overlook again.

Is a converter available for the smaller crank hub? Pulling the engine, then the crank for replacement or hub machining is a lot of work and dollars . A new converter would be cheaper.
No, the input shaft is smaller too.
