What is the correct part number for a 70-71 E-body shifter boot (with console if that matters)?

I have two with the same part number (3467770). The tall one is very hard and not pliable, the shifter frequently pops out of third gear.

The shorter one is unused NOS and is much more flexible. Do they stretch out and get harder with age or is that a variation in vendors?

A lot of the repros I see appear to be tall. Any recommendations for a good reproduction?

Thanks

it's not so much that it stretches out as to the width of the shifter going through the slot..a narrow shifter will hold the boot higher as a wider boot will slide it down further..

The original rubber boots are much softer then any of the reproductions. And the repops rip easily.

If I remember correctly, for some reason the 3&4 speed (non-pistol grip) boots share the same part number as the pistol grip boots.

Its strange but true,,,,

The correct three speed NOS shifter boot is 2996 405, I have five NOS ones stamped with that part number.

Thanks for all the replies! I still don't get it though. The 3-spd boots had the round hole right?

The taller boot is a later production and the rubber is very thick. They were still available a few years ago, might still be however they will pull the car out of gear like was stated.

Just checked some of my parts books:
70 lists the 2950 201 number for V and L A Bodies(oblong)
70-71 lists the 2950 201 number for E and B Bodies(oblong)
70 lists the 2996 405 number for 3 and 4 speed E Bodies(square)
70-71 lists the 2996 405 number for 3 and 4 speed E Bodies(square)
72 lists the 3467 770 number for 3 speed E and B bodies
72 list the 3467 766 number for 4 speed E and B bodies

I think the 2950 201 number may be an error in the 70-71 book, it should be an A Body four speed shifter, A Body guys will have to chime in and let us know.
70 and 70-71 books list the 2996 405 number for both 3 and 4 speed cars but list the boot as square with no mention of oblong(which I assume means round?)
The 72 book is the first one that mentions the 3467 770 number but only in reference to a 3 speed. Has anyone seen a boot with the 3467 766 number stamped into the base?
Looks like the 2996 405 and 3467 770 are somehow correct for both the 3 speed and four speed cars. From our posts it seems that both do indeed exist with both sets of part numbers and with both the oblong and square tops on them.
Comments please!

Correct on the taller boot with the taller neck being the later production.
Here's what you got from your dealer in 1972 for $3.84...NOS boot with 3467770 on the side and then the vendor code...mine is the same style as the short one pictured.
Bruce is the vendor code 53495 the same for both.

OK, so I have a repop boot that is the tall type and indeed does cause my shifter to pop out of gear. Who makes the shorter boot?

The one Brewer's shows appears to be shorter but I haven't seen it in person yet.

theres only one 4spd boot number #3467 770

As pointed out, there's 2 flavors - short & tall, I believe the difference is based on manufacturing date as the rubber is slightly different.

The tall ones seem to be the most prevalant - early NOS versions are shorter and softer...
