Sold my Duster a while back. I'm really kinda out of the muscle car thing right now. For some reason I have been dreaming of an 84-86 Daytona (I like the grills/faces on them along with some other items) Years ago outside of the muscle cars I used to take liking to them, especially those in silver.

You really don't see them much anymore, maybe for obvious reasons, but tell me what they are. Where they are, and if I'm crazy or not. In the past I have been a guy who gets a car, and within a few months it's done. This one...I'm in no hurry. I feel like I could strip it and paint it the color I want (Silver, hehe) and just slowly put it back together. I know rust was a problem in the front floors.

Anything you can inform me on would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I have an '88 I'm building a race car out of. Basically the same as what you want but with the newer nose. I still see quite a few of the newer style around, but rarely ever see the older style.

Check out the classifieds on www.turbododge.com or www.turbo-mopar.com

There are usually quite a few nice cars for sale there.

I've just recently rejoined the turbo Dodge world after a few year hiatus. I just bought a 1987 Shelby Lancer.

Basically just try and find a rust free one, or as close to that as you can. Anything else can be dealt with fairly easily, just there is really no repro sheet metal for these cars.

What are your goals for the cars? Build up a mild little turbo 2.2? Go all out? Convert to rwd?

I like the 92/93 daytona's myself and have had a few over the years and still have my favorite which is a 93 iroc r/t.
But as others have said watch out for rust in the rockers, floors and spare tire well areas and strut towers.

I still find them in pretty good shape or at least the body is. I purchased a 93 not long ago with pretth much no rust for cheap. I hope to V8 it at some point.

primarily, just a 2.2/turbo car to drive around and R & R. Doesn't have to be souped up or anything. I almost wouldn't even mind something thats not running with a good body. I can pretty much clean and paint it and refurbish everything

My very first new car was an 86 Daytona.

2.2 TBI, A525 5 speed. Only option was AM/FM/cassette. Not even AC.

In the 5 years I owned it I put roughly 25k miles on it with three engines and four transmissions being replaced under warranty.

I did upgrade the suspension with better shocks and struts, thicker front sway bar, added a rear sway bar and cut the coils one coil. It handled great.

the drive train was junk though. I finally built the trans myself after the warranty went out and added every HD part MP had for that trans. Then the engine holed a piston and I was done with it.

If I were to get another Daytona of that vintage, which I love the looks of, I would plan to scrap the drive train and replace it with much stouter stuff. Probably the 2.0L/5 speed from a Neon or a 2.4L/5 speed from a PT.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

My dad had an 86 C/S Daytona for years, His first ever new car. Ran great, drove great, and he loved it. The 2.2 were prone to head problems and his was no different with a head gasket blown at 40k. Head needed welding and shaving. Most i;ve seen have been rusted to the ground, so maybe look on the west coast.

The first gens had a lousy transmission, got much better for 87+. Also for 87 or 88 can't remember which, the block got better as well. However if you're not looking for over 200hp or so, the stock stuff can be made to work just fine.

I believe there is an 87 shelby 5 spd around here for 2500. No rust, runs and drives. I think there are 2 actually. I also have an 89 in my drive, it's a shelby

86 they went to 11mm headbolts, in 89 they went to common block.

The 86-88 block is pretty stout, they handle 300+ hp for years. I have had the 89 block over 440hp and 600 ft/lbs torque.

Never had a block failure either way.

They didn't last long here in the rust belt.

I don't think I've seen one the last few years on the road. I do see them at car shows sometimes though.

This one "survived" the "Northeast" because it got parked for the winters!
