Guys I just put 383 in my roadrunner. I bought a rebuilt engine from a Mopar guy never ran. Stuck it in but had excessive valve train noise. Took valve covers off and heads bone dry. I took off sending unit and primed motor w drill and oil comes out but does not shoot out like I'm used to. Put auto meter gauge on and pretty much reads 0. Bought new hv oil pump thinking it was just bad and still same result. I'm at a loss. We yanked oil pan and pickup looks new and is clear. Nothing obvious as we looked at oil pump passage where oil pump goes and everything seems fine. Everything in motor is brand new and I've been up and down it now. When I start it , sounded good from back end other than valve train. Makes me think lower end is getting oil. I'm clueless and at odds on what to do next. Any engine guys ever run into this? Need help fast

probably missing an oil gallery plug. Been on SB's for decades so I'm rusty on BB (but a 451 is in the works) but I think there's one under the timing cover & others will chime in with more info.

You started the motor dry???? then tried to prime it? Could be an oil galley plug that was not put in. But it really should have been primed before start up...Try Rotating the motor over by hand to a different spot to prime it..

You're running the drill counter-clockwise, right? And using a known-good gauge in one of the holes at the top rear of the block?

Primed til oil came out of sender and figured it was fine. Only after running did I realize problem. Put 2 different gauges on same result. Yes counter clockwise on drill. So galley plugs on front of motor? If I had it over again I would stick gauge on from beginning

If good it would have been a geyser. Yes there's a pipe plug behind the timing cover

I believe there are 2 plugs behind the timing cover - one on the front and one underneath the galley.

There are two oil galley plugs in the front of BB mopars, one behind the cam gear on the passenger side and one tucked under the cam gear pointed towards the oil pan on the drivers side Four in the back, two on top and two behind the flex plate or flywheel. If it had pressure to the rear of the block I would look at all the lifters to make sure there in, especially on the drivers side

Might be 3 total with one that faces down IIRC.

do you have a bore scope?

You can remove the fuel pump and plate, and look in while priming the oil system.

I had oil coming out in back but no actual pressure with gauge hooked up. Lets hope it's a front plug and not rear of motor behind flywheel as I have all my 4 speed stuff hooked up now. Do not want to tear apart whole motor obviously . I have no bore scope so I guess I'm tearing front of motor off today

I think with the fuel pump out you could hear the oil escaping through a missing plug. You would just have to hacve a helper run the priming drill for you while you listened at the front. If a plug was missing at the rear of the engine you would have oil leaking out of the bell housing.

a mirror and flash light will work.

i always have to double check, the lower one

I left that one out MANY years ago, (in a 440 RV van) lesson learned

Check your oil pressure gauge with some air pressure first now I have had a valve spring break while racing,it broke on the return road idling back to the pits, and that let a pushrod fall out of the drivers side which allowed that roller lifter to pop out of its lifter bore, which resulted in either zero or less than 10 lbs of oil pressure, I can't remember now exactly what the gauge read when I looked at it, it was low so I shut it off right away. This problem has me intriqued Please let us kow what you find BTW, I have also had the bypass valve in the BB oil pumps stick half way open due to a tiny bit of debris being caught between the valve and oil pump passge it rides in, new motors make metal while breaking in I wouldn't think that is your case do to swapping ol pumps but is is easy to ceck, take the pump off the motor and remove the plug and spring that holds the bypass valve in and point the passage down toward s the bench, table or floor and see if it will side out using ravity. It will be slow to slide out do to the oil in there but it should slide out easily. If it has to be sucked out of there with a magnet or tapping the cover on a hard surafce check it, the valve, and the bore real carefully for burrs or debris Let us know what you find

Is the pan still off, you can look for the plug from the bottom

He already put a new HV pump on it with the same result...

I would pull the rocker arm shafts and check them.
just to be sure there is no damage, from lack of oil.

hate to find out down the road.
